Alpine ski giant Marcel Hirscher did it again. The Austrian had already secured the Giant Slalom World Cup before Saturday's race in Åre and made sure to really make a final mark by beating Henrik Kristoffersen by 23 hundredths in the last race of the season.

It was already clear before Saturday’s race that Marcel Hirscher would collect his 4thback to back Giant Slalom globe on Saturday and that he was the favorite for another victory. Indeed, Hirscher led with a comfortable half a second after the first run and despite a few bobbles in the second run, took the win 23 hundredths ahead of Henrik Kristoffersen of Norway. Frenchman Victor Muffat Jeandet finished third, behind Kristoffersen who posted the fastest second run.

In the season rankings, Hirscher collected a grand total of 720 points, 145 points more than Kristoffersen. Alexis Pinturault finished 3rdwith 329 points. The Swedish GS ace Matts Olsson would have needed 31 more points to climb on the season podium; in other words, he sneeded to finish 2ndtoday instead of 6th. Olsson’s finished the season in 5thplace (299 points).

The bigger news of the day was that Hirscher scored his 13thseason victory, equalling the all-time record set by Ingemar Stenmark in the 1978/1979 season and then tied by another Austrian Hermann Maier in 2000/2001. Hirscher now has the chance to write skiing history if he wins the men’s slalom on Sunday. He has already secured the slalom crystal globe as well as his 7thconsecutive overall globe.

The penultimate racing day of the Audi FIS Ski World Cup 2017/2018 campaign began with a crispy morning with temperatures below -20C. However, the winds had turned from east to west overnight, and grew heavier as the day went on as the temperatures rose. Eventually the men’s start had to be lowered to the reserve start for the 2ndrun due to the heavy winds.

The Swedish slalom Olympic champion André Myhrer has a cold and chose to skip the giant slalom race Saturday to focus on Sunday’s slalom where he aims to finish well to clinch the third place on the season podium.

Don't miss the evenings festivities at Åre torg (Åre square) where the athletes will be available for autograph signing. See full schedule below. Follow the Audi FIS Ski World Cup Finals and Åre 2019 by downloading the Åre 2019 appfrom Google Play or App Store.
