The Royal Swedish Opera to Gasometer in 2027 ─ the former gas clock will serve as home stage during renovation

»Finally, we can present a solution where our business can live, develop and take steps into the 2030s, even during the renovation period! The government has been clear that the Royal Swedish Opera's mission as a national stage remains unchanged throughout the period that the Opera House is being rebuilt. Therefore, it has been crucial for us to find a stage where we can continue to work with artistic height and where we can also continue to develop the performing arts«, says Fredrik Lindgren. 

The Opera's stage in Gasometer will have room for 1,600 people in the audience and through the move, the Royal Swedish Opera will increase the capacity of the auditorium by almost 30 percent compared to today. A recent survey conducted by NOVUS on behalf of the Royal Swedish Opera shows that more than one in three of all those who have not yet taken part in the Royal Opera's activities want to do so.

Gasometer is housed in a former industrial building, a gas clock, in Norra Djurgårdsstaden, a part of Stockholm which has been transformed from an industrial area to a modern and vibrant district. A hotel is planned in the adjacent former industrial premises, and nearby housing and offices are already being built, linking the area with Stockholm's city center. Gasometer is owned by the City of Stockholm and is run by Cirkus Venues, which also runs Cirkus and Hasselbacken on Djurgården, among other things.  

The Royal Swedish Opera will need additional premises for administration, rehearsal and other activities. These premises has not yet been determined.
