The EU’s Unscientific Crusade for Public Health
What we eat, drink, and indulge in is becoming an increasingly political matter in Europe. But both the Commission and the Parliament are ignoring scientific evidence in their public health ambitions—so argues Henrik Jönsson in the latest episode of The Fall or Rise of Europe?

Henrik Jönsson and EPHI’s series The Fall or Rise of Europe? continues.
In Brussels, EU institutions are trying to influence what Europe’s citizens eat and drink—lifestyle choices that arguably should remain private decisions. But beyond overstepping its core mission, the EU’s public health policies also lack scientific support.
In the new episode, we meet Fredrik Nyström, physician and professor at Linköping University, who explains that there is little reason to quit Swedish snus and that wine can very well be part of a healthy diet—since it lowers blood pressure, contrary to today’s dominant narrative.
Wine-related tourism to Europe is also booming. Yet instead of supporting this growing industry, the EU is imposing new obstacles—like minimum alcohol taxes and mandatory health warning labels for all wine and beer producers.
