A bone fragment with runic letters!

One of Sweden's largest archaeological excavations is currently taking place in the Grynmalaren district in central Lund. The excavation is taking place just south of Mårtenstorget in Lund, ahead of a planned house construction.

The archaeologists have so far made many interesting finds, some of which may date back to the time of Lund's founding 1,000 years ago. Among them are several pieces of bone with runes!

“We hope to be able to map the traces of the people who lived in Lund during the Middle Ages,” says Sebastian Boström, archaeologist at Kulturen, the Museum of Cultural History in Lund.

Welcome to visit the excavation!

It is an area rich in finds. After a few weeks of excavation, archaeologists have unearthed several interesting finds: bone fragments with engraved runes, shoes from the Middle Ages, game pieces, coins, buttons, religious items and much more. Objects that will now be examined in more detail.

The archaeological investigation at the streets Lilla Tvärgatan and Grynmalaregatan is being carried out on behalf of the County Administrative Board of Skåne as a collaborative project between Kulturen in Lund, the Archaeologists at the State Historical Museums and Sydsvensk Arkeologi AB, where Kulturen is the principal for the project. Lund Municipality has decided that a senior residence will be built on the site.

The media is now invited to the site to follow the work, meet the archaeologists and see the finds that have been made so far! If interested, please contact communications officer Johan Romin, contact details below.

The archaeological excavation will continue until autumn 2025.

Historiedagen lockade tusentals!25.5.2025 21:29:50 CEST | Pressmeddelande
