In humans, fine motor skills can take two decades to fully develop. Tangent Robotics, which today announced its pre-seed funding round, aims to speed up the timeline for robots. The company will use the funds to develop skilled robotic manipulation capabilities at the intersection of hand hardware, touch sensing, and motor learning, and deploy them in demanding manufacturing environments.

Tangent Robotics is developing fine motor skills for robot hands, which unlock the ability to perform critical tasks for what we want our economy to build locally, fast and at scale

"Fine motor skills are hard to learn, and represent a layer that is currently missing in robotics but omnipresent in the real world," says Pedro Piacenza, Tangent's co-founder. "They unlock the ability to perform delicate, intricate manipulation. Tasks like assembly, threading, connector mating, gasket seating, snap fitting, gear meshing - these are critical steps for most of what we want our economy to build locally, fast and at scale, and they all require a level of fine motor skill that today's robots don't have."

To enable these missing capabilities, Tangent Robotics has developed precise light-based touch sensors for robot fingers, robot hands that can perfectly track human fingertips, and new data collection and machine learning methods, all of which come together in the fine motor skill layer that enables autonomous dexterity. While other components such as Vision-Language-Action models, can be capable of abstract, semantic intelligence, a Tangent Robotics hand is designed to take over for the delicate, high-value last mile of skilled manipulation, such as unstructured part sequencing and processing, exacting assemblies and manufacturing, installation and maintenance including disassembly, inspection, reassembly and wiring of electrical or mechanical equipment, and many others.

While the human hand is the pinnacle of motor skill, Tangent Robotics is not attempting to create engineered clones of it. "Trying to copy the human hand is a mistake akin to building flying machines with flapping wings," says Matei Ciocarlie, Tangent co-founder and Columbia Engineering robotics professor. "What we can do is build robot hands that are capable of dexterity even with non-human-like components or articulation." In the process, the company aims to reduce the practice time it takes to achieve such skills to days and then hours.

Spun out of Columbia Engineering's Robotic Manipulation and Mobility Lab, Tangent Robotics brings unique expertise at the intersection of sensing, robot hand design and motor learning. While at Columbia Engineering, the founding team, which includes Piacenza, Ciocarlie, and unconventional electronics expert Ioannis Kymissis, introduced the DISCO robot finger, capable of sensing touch via light, designed hands for NASA's Assistive Free Flyer robots on board the International Space Station, and built the first robot hand capable of in-hand dexterity even in the dark, named one of Time Magazine's Best Inventions of 2023. Before Columbia, Ciocarlie co-led the manipulation team at Willow Garage, the robotics hub and incubator where the Robot Operating System, or ROS, was first developed.

"Grippers and suction cups are effective in less delicate applications (pick & pack, sorting, etc.) but incompatible with a lot of economic activity," says Matt Wichrowski, Partner at Fly Ventures. “The fine motor control needed for more complex manipulation is an incredibly difficult technical challenge, but one that the Tangent team has spent their entire career focused on.”

David Sokolic, Partner at Toyota Ventures adds: "Tangent’s approach flips the script on traditional robotic manipulation. By engineering compliance primarily into the sensor stack rather than relying solely on the mechanics, they aim to deliver the high-fidelity touch needed for physical AI. Toyota Ventures is thrilled to support their pragmatic, hardware-first journey as they attempt to unlock a massive bottleneck in industrial assembly and help manufacturers automate their most stubborn tasks."

Additional investors in the round included Logos Fund and Sparked Ventures.

Hitachi Joins Anthropic’s Critical Infrastructure Defense Program9.10.2026 02:32:00 CEST | Press Release

Hitachi, Ltd. (TSE:6501, "Hitachi"), today announced that it has joined Anthropic, PBC’s (“Anthropic”) “Critical Infrastructure Defense Program,” launched on October 8, 2026, as a founding partner. The program is aimed at strengthening cyber defense for critical infrastructure, including control systems supporting power, water, manufacturing, and transportation services. Infrastructure systems that underpin society and the economy cannot tolerate prolonged downtime, making it difficult to implement certain security measures, such as system shutdowns for patch deployment. At the same time, advances in AI are significantly shortening the time between vulnerability disclosure and exploitation, creating an urgent need to redesign systems based on the assumption that cyberattacks will occur. The program seeks to strengthen cybersecurity through rapid vulnerability detection and remediation by integrating Anthropic’s advanced AI models, Claude, into the products and services of trusted syste

Seiden Law LLP issues statement: Prosecuted by Press Conference: Declared Guilty Without a Charge, Yim Leak Family Asks UN Human Rights Experts to Hold Thailand to Its Own Treaty Commitments8.10.2026 18:26:00 CEST | Press Release

Seiden Law LLP, chief global counsel to Cambodian businessman Yim Leak, announced today that Jared Genser, international counsel to Mr. Yim and his wife, has asked two UN Special Rapporteurs to send an urgent appeal to the Thai government. The request is made on behalf of the couple and their seven-year-old son. It says Thailand violated its international human rights commitments by announcing the family’s guilt before any court had tried them, and by freezing their assets, including their minor son’s savings, without a hearing. Six Official Statements in Nine Months. No Charge Filed in Any Court. Between December 2025 and September 2026, Thai officials described Mr. Yim as the center of a criminal network on six occasions: at two press conferences chaired by the head of the Thai government, in the House of Representatives, and in three government press releases. The head of the Thai government said the network had been “found to have committed” offenses. Asked about the suspects’ lawy

Sam Altman-Backed Meanwhile Raises $37.5M as Families Across Asia, Europe and the Middle East Turn to Bitcoin Life Insurance8.10.2026 18:12:00 CEST | Press Release

Meanwhile, the first life insurer licensed to operate entirely in Bitcoin, today announced $37.5 million in new funding from its existing investors. Bain Capital Crypto led the round, alongside Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, and Morgan Creek Digital. Meanwhile, whose backers also include Sam Altman, has now raised more than $180 million. The round follows a surge in international demand for Meanwhile’s Bitcoin life insurance policies, particularly in Asia, Europe and the Middle East amid broader macro instability. In early 2026, Meanwhile launched BTC Life 1-Pay, a single-premium whole life policy built for high-net-worth clients outside the United States. It is the company's second product line after BTC 10-Pay, which is purposely designed for US taxpayers. As the company eyes further international growth, Meanwhile has signed 15 brokers serving wealthy families since launch, including in the insurance hubs of Singapore
