AcadeMedia invests further in game education through the acquisition of Futuregames
In just over a decade, the turnover of the games industry has increased from just over 1 billion to almost 35 billion. Games produced in Sweden have been downloaded six billion times across the globe. It’s not unlikely to expect that every fourth person in the world has played a game made by Swedes, according to The Swedish Games Industry’s Game Developer Index 2021.
-It’s very exciting that we continue our investment in this growing segment. We’re already successful within this field through our game educations at The Game Assembly and I’m looking forward to exploring what AcadeMedia and Futuregames can accomplish together, says Christer Hammar, Head of the Adult Education Segment at AcadeMedia.
Futuregames, one of the best game educations in the world
Futuregames has, during its 25 years of operations, continuously been ranked as one of the best game educations in the world. The educations are developed in close collaboration with the games industry and Futuregames works with some of the most successful players such as Avalanche Studios, Star Stable, Paradox Arctic, North Kingdom, King, Turborilla, Zordix, Embracer, EA Dice and Epic. As of today, about 14% of the employees in the Swedish games industry has been educated by Futuregames.
Futuregames sees diversity as an integral part of its business when it comes to students and the teachers the company employs but also as a key ingredient in the games they develop.
-We would like to go against the norms, change and inspire future generations to view the games industry as inclusive and a job segment of the future, says Tom Løyche, CEO of Futuregames. In a relatively short period of time, games have developed to become one of the most important forms of entertainment and we would like to offer our knowledge to help build the competencies of tomorrow. Through the partnership with AcadeMedia, we will get the opportunity to take a leading position also on the international games education arena.
Futuregames offers a wide variety of educations, from short courses for games professionals to full time programmes for game developers who have just entered the industry. They also have many international students studying on their programmes. The educations are offered online as well an onsite in Boden, Karlstad, Skellefteå and Stockholm in Sweden.
The next step in AcadeMedia´s international game education venture
The acquisition of Futuregames is part AcadeMedia´s strategy to form strategic alliances with several game education providers, in Sweden as well as abroad.
– Futuregames offers several qualitative game development programmes in Sweden and is in the process of starting up some interesting initiatives abroad. Through this acquisition, we would like to use our experience within education to help Futuregames accelerate their international expansion plans. Together we can create synergies and hence take the next step in our game education venture. This acquisition complements The Game Assembly´s educations, both in terms of geographical reach and competencies, says Jonas Jacobsson, International Business Development Director at AcadeMedia.
