CANNES: Film i Väst presented new co-productions in Cannes

A selection of new co-productions was presented at the Film i Väst press conference in Cannes with several well-known Swedish and international directors, producers and actors. The four feature films in this year's Cannes programme were also presented.

- We have a very exciting year ahead, with several major films shooting at Film i Väst, featuring well-known international actors like Joel Kinnaman, Léa Seydoux, Hermione Corfield, Alba August and David Dencik. I’m confident we’ll have both commercial successes and festival darlings, says Peter Possne, Head of Production at Film i Väst.

The new co-productions presented by Film i Väst:

HORSE BOY

Israeli filmmaker Ari Folman, whose 2008 Waltz with Bashir nabbed a foreign-language Oscar nom, is set to write and direct Horse Boy, an English-language feature based on Rupert Isaacson’s New York Times bestseller that will topline current Cannes jury member Léa Seydoux and Joel Kinnaman. Film i Väst is co-producing and the film will partially be shot in Region Västra Götaland, Sweden. More information>

SEA FEVER

The acclaimed actress Hermione Corfield plays the lead in Neasa Hardiman's upcoming thriller Sea Fever, which is partially screened in Region Västra Götaland. The film is produced by Fantastic Films in co-production with Film i Väst and Bright Pictures. More information>

DANIEL

The dramatic story of Danish photographer Daniel Rye held captive by the Islamic State terrorist organisation for over a year is now being turned into a major feature film. Toolbox Film is adapting Puk Damsgård’s highly acclaimed bestseller “Ser du månen, Daniel”. Niels Arden Oplev, the man behind such critically acclaimed films as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, We Shall Overcome, Speed Walking and numerous films and TV series in the USA, is directing. Screenwriter is Anders Thomas Jensen, who wrote Susanne Bier’s Oscar-winning In a Better World. Film i Väst is co-producing and the film will partially be shot in Region Västra Götaland, Sweden. QUICK

The case of Thomas Quick is Sweden’s biggest legal scandal ever. The upcoming feature Quick is being directed by Mikael Håfström, who is now returning to Sweden to make his first Swedish film since Oscar nominated Evil. Quick stars David Dencik, Alba August and Jonas Karlsson and is produced by Helena Danielsson, Brain Academy and co-produced by Film i Väst. It will partially be shot in Region Västra Götaland, Sweden. More information>

Film i Väst also presented the four co-productions in Cannes this year; The Wild Pear Tree by Nuri Bilge Ceylan in Official Selection, The House That Jack Built by Lars von Trier in Offical Selection out of competition, Border by Ali Abbasi in Un Certain Regard and The Fugue by Agnieszka Smoczyńska in Semaine de la Critique.

Since 2008 Film i Väst has had 35 co-productions in Cannes.

During the film festival in Venice Film i Väst Analysis introduces av unique, pan-European study, All that is solid melts into air – Public Film Funding at a Crossroads II. It is presented at a seminar as a part of Venice Production Bridge by Tomas Eskilsson, head of Film i Väst Analysis. Public Film and Audiovisual Policies and Funding at a Crossroads is a research project in three parts that explores and discuss the future purpose and relevance of film and audiovisual funding. Last year’s much talked about and debated report Public Film Funding at a Crossroads is now followed up with All that is solid melts into air – Public Film Funding at a Crossroads II.
