Democracy Under Siege

Dela

SANTIAGO SIERRA. Political Prisoners of Contemporary Spain.
Santiago Sierra’s piece, “Political Prisoners in Contemporary Spain”, consists of 24 pixellated photographs, including images of the deposed Catalan vice-president, Oriol Junqueras, and two leading figures in influential Catalan pro-independence groups, Jordi Cuixart and Jordi Sànchez. All three are currently in prison and facing possible charges over their role in Catalonia’s failed bid for independence.

The work was due to be exhibited at the Arco contemporary art fair in Madrid, but was taken down after the exhibition centre’s operator, Ifema, successfully requested it be dropped on the grounds that the attendant controversy was hurting the “visibility” of the other art on show.

Maikel Dominguez. Cuba/USA. Full of Pollen (Snowing a Lot). I come from a country where human rights are violated.
In my country everything is politics, even art. In my country there is censorship for art outside the interests of
government. My painting has always been a refuge, a space of freedom, an island within another island. My work is also an example of survival against the cruelty of a context where human rights are violated. With my work I do not denounce an injustice, with my painting I survive injustice in a strange land. My work is not just painting on canvas, my work is attitude towards life.
