Cologne (ots) | CIVIS Media Prize 2019 – Nominations and first awards!

Anti-Semitism and right-wing extremism are the big topics in the CIVIS Competition 2019 – along with migration, integration, flight and asylum. The political climate in Germany and Europe is changing. What is at stake are our fundamental democratic values.

Europe’s most prestigious media prize for integration and cultural diversity is once again celebrating outstanding radio, film, TV and internet programmes. In 2019, a total of 767 programmes from 22 EU member states and Switzerland entered the Europe-wide competition. 21 programmes have been nominated – four decisions already final. However, which programmes have won the renowned CIVIS Media Prize will only be announced on 23 May 2019 at the award ceremony in the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin.

The CIVIS Media Prize for Integration and Cultural Diversity in Europe is awarded in the categories AUDIO, TV.VIDEO, DIGITAL, YOUNG C. and CIVIS SPECIAL.

Funk – a content network of ARD/ZDF and Westdeutscher Rundfunk are nominated with three or four programs – as well the Nederlandse Publieke Omroep 3, the Österreichische Rundfunk, the Radio Télévision Suisse and ARTE. Further nominationes go to Bayerischer Rundfunk, Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen, the Deutschlandradio, the Südwestrundfunk and to SPIEGEL ONLINE.

Four prizes have already been awarded: The EUROPEAN YOUNG C. is awarded to the Hamburg Media School, the SPECIAL PRIZE – FOOTBALL + INTEGRATION goes to the Sveriges Television, to HAWAR.help, to the Deutschlandfunk and to Funk – the content network of ARD/ZDF.

The European CIVIS Media Prize will be awarded on 23 May 2019 in a televised gala ceremony at the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin. Around 400 special guests from the fields of media and politics are going to attend the award ceremony. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the Federal President of Germany, and Antonio Tajani, the President of the European Parliament, are the patrons of the CIVIS Media Prize 2019.

The CIVIS CINEMA is an audience award given to European feature films in German cinema. Audiences can cast their vote online between 24 April and 3 May 2019.

The CIVIS Media Prize is offered by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft der öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunkanstalten in Deutschland (ARD), represented by WDR together with the Freudenberg Foundation. The media partners are ORF, SRG SSR, RTV Slovenia, Deutsche Welle, Deutschlandradio, PHOENIX, ARTE, 3sat, Allianz Deutscher Produzenten, VFF - Verwertungsgesellschaft der Film- und Fernsehproduzenten and the EBU. The Integration Commissioner of the German Federal Government, the Fundamental Rights Agency of the EU (FRA) and the WDR mediagroup are cooperation partners. The CIVIS Media Prize is under the patronage of the European Parliament.

03.06.2022 – Cologne (ots) The winners of the European CIVIS Media Prize for Integration and Cultural Diversity 2022 have been announced: The main prize of 15,000 euros, the CIVIS TOP AWARD, goes to the documentary film Schwarze Adler (Black Eagles) (Amazon Prime Video | BROADVIEW | ZDF), by author and director Torsten Körner. The film tells the story of social prejudice and hostility against black footballers. It is also the winner of the CIVIS VIDEO AWARD in the information category. The jury of the CIVIS Media Prize praised Torsten Körner´s documentary as “emotionally moving, journalistically and artistically to the point - the plight of these eagles in the German national jersey gets under your skin." The VIDEO AWARD in the entertainment category goes to Paul Mommertz und Magnus Vattrodt, authors of The Wannsee Conference (ZDF | Constantin Television). The competition for the European CIVIS Media Prize is now open. European programmes on addressing migration, integration, cultural diversity and – linked to this – social cohesion can be submitted up to and including 19 January 2022. The CIVIS Media Prize honours outstanding TV, radio and online productions that promote peaceful coexistence between people from different geographic and cultural backgrounds. The CIVIS Awards are presented in four fields and in various categories: VIDEO AWARD: Non-fiction programmes, fiction programmes and social media formats (moving images) AUDIO AWARD: Short programmes of up to six minutes, long programmes over six minutes and podcasts YOUNG C. AWARD (films, age restriction applies) CINEMA AWARD (audience award) The CIVIS TOP AWARD is an additional prize honouring the best production of the year in the AUDIO, VIDEO and YOUNG C. categories. The main prize of €15,000, the CIVIS TOP AWARD, goes to the podcast Rice and Shine | Hamburg 1980: Als der rechte Terror wieder aufflammte by the authors Minh Thu Tran and Vanessa Vu. The podcast addresses the arson attack on a refugee shelter in Hamburg, in which two young men from Vietnam died in August 1980. The production also picks up the podcast audience prize CIVIS AUDIO AWARD Podcast. Anja Buwert and Thilo Mischke receive the prize in the category of VIDEO AWARD/Information for ProSieben Spezial.
