In the wake of Metoo: Upsurge in interest in whistleblowing services
A 500 per cent growth in the number of wrong-doings reported, and a tenfold increase in the number of new customers. Sweden-based WhistleB has seen a surge in the demand for whistleblowing services in the wake of Metoo. “The business community has reacted strongly,” says Gunilla Hadders of WhistleB.
As a direct result of the Metoo campaign, many companies and organisations have chosen to set up their own channels for whistleblowing, to better manage these types of issues internally. This has led to a tenfold increase in the number of new customers turning to whistleblowing service company, WhistleB, compared to the corresponding period last year.
“This demonstrates increased awareness and a great need for this type of service. However, we believe that Sweden can do a lot more to make it even easier for companies that take business ethics seriously. In France and the Netherlands, for example, legislation is in place that states that all companies with more than 50 employees must offer whistleblowing services. In Sweden we only comply with the EU requirements for financial institutions to have a whistleblowing service,” says Gunilla Hadders.
The number of reports from existing customers has also increased significantly after Metoo; by as much as 500 per cent. The comparison was made between the fourth quarter of 2017 and the same period of the previous year. The high number of reports received has also continued in 2018.
“Metoo has completely changed how whistleblowers are viewed. People who dare to say “no” are strong. Our customers have told us that the increased reporting has enabled them to act and solve problems around harassment in the workplace,” says Gunilla Hadders.
