Åre will be in the world’s winter sport spotlight when the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships open in just 100 days on 4 February 2019. To experience the show from the front row, the most time efficient and sustainable way to travel is undoubtedly the SJ night train. Get a great night of sleep while SJ takes you comfortably to the heart of Åre.
– Train is a lifeline for Jämtland and Åre and our connection to the rest of Sweden and the world. Thanks to the good train connections we have an alternative to driving and flying. Modern infrastructure is key for our scarcely populated area, said Niklas Carlsson, CEO of Åre 2019.
Taking the night train gets you to Åre refreshed in good time before the competitions begin. The race arena is within walking distance from the train station or you can hop on one of the shuttle buses circulating around town to take you to the competitions and back. If you wish, you can even take a day trip to Åre to experience the Championships. Leave Stockholm at night, spend the day in Åre and return with the night train again.
The SJ trains leave a minimal carbon footprint and for the organizers at Åre 2019 it is critically important that visitors consider the impact of their choice of transport. Åre 2019 is aiming to stage as fossil-fuel free World Championships as possible and hopes that many visitors choose to take the train to help the event to realize that ambitious vision.
– Given the changing climate and the present world where alpine ski racing is already feeling the impact of warmer winters, it is important for us as a World Championships organizer to be a role model and act. Our vision is to carry out as sustainable World Championships as possible and that’s a great fit for train travel with our partner SJ since train is a sustainable transport alternative, noted Niklas Carlsson.
The night train has daily connections from Gothenburg and Stockholm, arriving at Åre in time for breakfast.
