The New Prize for Journalism [Nya journalistpriset] – for best non-Swedish journalism

Lernia institutes The New Prize for Journalism, for journalism in Sweden in languages other than Swedish. The purpose is to promote a constructive discussion on integration by paying attention to non-Swedish media and platforms in Sweden. The prize is awarded for the first time at Järvaveckan on 15 June.

Education and job matching company Lernia hands out The New Prize for Journalism in two categories: a) Best non-Swedish journalistic contribution in Sweden, b) Best medium, platform or forum that, in a language other than Swedish, publishes and discusses constructively about integration.

Lernia has collaborated with and advertised in non-Swedish media for many years. It is through these media, among other things, that Lernia and similar companies come into contact with people who are new in Sweden for education, staffing assignments and for recruitment to their clients.

"In our contacts with people who are new in Sweden, we see that media in languages other than Swedish are very useful to them. This is why one of the prize categories is targeted at media or journalists who constructively reflect on and discuss integration", says Katarina Devell, head of diversity issues and multiculturalism at Lernia.

In Sweden there are currently fifteen news sites in different languages. Additionally, there are radio stations and Internet forums, Twitter and Facebook accounts. The media agency Right Option Media estimates that these media collectively attract more than a million readers, listeners and viewers in Sweden and abroad.

"We are constantly being reminded that there is a divide between the classic Swedish media landscape and these media. For example, they don’t receive press releases from authorities. Few politicians make moves here. Few companies even know that they exist. They generally work in a quite limited arena. To give attention to these media and journalists is a way to better integrate them and their consumers", says Amjad Aloul, member of the Jury of The New Prize for Journalism and founder of Crossborder Communication.

Anyone can submit a nomination to The New Prize for Journalism - for example, readers, listeners, viewers, creators, a friend or a colleague. It can be a program, report, blog, editorial or platform. Nominations should be submitted, no later than 31 May, to nominera@nyajournalistpriset.se.

The award will be presented at Järvaveckan in Tensta outside Stockholm on Friday, 15 June. The theme of the day is democracy and voting. Speaker is Jimmie Åkesson, the Sweden Democrats.
