Canada must reduce reliance on extractive industries and U.S. exports, report finds22.4.2025 08:34:18 CEST | news aktuell GmbH | Press Release

Los Angeles/Ottawa (DNA) - From dissatisfaction with the Trudeau government to dissatisfaction with Trump’s policies — compounded by general anxiety around tariffs, the economy and a deteriorating relationship with the U.S. — navigating an economic downturn should be an immediate priority for Canada as it heads into a federal election, a new report recommends. The report, based on the Berggruen Governance Index (BGI), was conducted by researchers from the Los Angeles-based Berggruen Institute think tank, the L

Next UK government must address 'long-term scars' of Brexit and austerity – study26.6.2024 15:58:30 CEST | news aktuell GmbH | Press Release

London (DNA) - A decline in effective national governance and the "long-term scars" caused by austerity measures and Brexit have stifled economic growth and undermined social cohesion in the United Kingdom, according to a study. Researchers concluded that an incoming government must make up for "lost" decade and a half since the global financial crisis in 2008, with urgent structural changes required to prevent "severe problems" impacting citizens' quality of life. With the General Election in the UK approaching on July 4, polls suggest Labour is on course for a return to power for the first time since 2010. But researchers at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and the Hertie School, a university in Berlin, Germany, have warned the next government will face "several interlocking crises" caused by past failings, with a decline in the quality of governance identified as the key cause. In the first half of 2023, global-fixed income and equity markets recovered from the sharp market downturn of the previous year. It seemed as if the world’s investors struggled to interpret risk, and between prolonged periods of slow activity, the tentative upturns grew almost unnoticeably stronger. Despite an uncertain and volatile market, Första AP-fonden contributed positively to the stability of the income pension system with a return of 6.6 per cent and reported net investment income of SEK 27.8 billion. Assets under management totalled SEK 446.4 billion at mid-year.
