New Managing Director appointed for AP6
In the financial sector, Katarina Staaf has, among other things, been the portfolio manager for unlisted investments within Life Science at Skandia Liv. During her time at SEB, she was the customer and portfolio manager for institutional clients with a focus on pension foundations and insurance companies. Katarina Staaf has been Managing Director of Evli Funds and has been a member of the management team for Riksbyggen in her role as CFO and real estate manager.
Through her various positions, Katarina Staaf has acquired a broad experience of issues related to corporate governance, regulatory compliance and sustainability.
"The Board has in Katarina Staaf found a senior leader with great expertise and broad experience of investments. AP6’s strategy remains firm and I am convinced that Katarina, with her drive and commitment, is the right person to successfully further develop the business,” says Catrina Ingelstam, chairman of the board of AP6.
Katarina Staaf has been a member of the board of AP6 since 2017. An assignment she will leave. She also has additional board assignments and commitments, which will be reviewed with regard to any conflicts of interest.
"It feels very honorable to have been given the confidence to lead an organization who has the task to manage pension capital through investments in unlisted companies. In my role as a board member, I have been able to take part of AP6's specialist expertise. In my new role, I will become operative, which I really look forward to," says Katarina Staaf, incoming Managing Director of AP6.
Katarina Staaf will take over as Managing Director of AP6 on September 1.

The Sixth Swedish National Pension Fund (AP6) differs from the other National Pension (AP) funds in the Swedish buffer capital system with its special mandate to invest in unlisted assets. AP6 specializes in private equity with a combination of Fund and Direct investments. Sustainability is an integral part of the investment process which includes models for ESG due diligence and monitoring. AP6 regards sustainability to be a prerequisite for achieving high returns in the long term.

AP6 ends its operations with a return of 7.5% and a profit of SEK 5.8 billion for the first eight months of the year. The average return for five years is 16%, for ten years 12.3%. Since its inception, AP6 has contributed SEK 72.5 billion to the pension system, corresponding to a return of 700%. It is this return that the decision to have a buffer fund specializing in unlisted assets has generated for the Swedish buffer fund system.

With the support of a cautiously better transaction market, AP6 created a positive return of 9.0 percent for 2024. AP6 reports a positive net result after currency hedging of SEK 6.4 billion, which increased the managed capital to SEK 77.1 billion. AP6's average five-year return amounted to 15.5 percent, which exceeds the target of 7.0 percent. AP6 has generated positive net profit every single year since 2012.

In a year such as 2023, which was interspersed with various challenges, AP6 is reporting positive net earnings of SEK 2.1 billion. Managed assets increased and amount to SEK 70.7 billion. AP6’s five-year return is 15.3 percent, exceeding the target of 11.4 percent. AP6 has generated positive net earnings every year for the past decade.

In 2022 the portfolio demonstrated good resilience despite challenging capital markets. AP6 delivered positive net earnings for the year of SEK 1.3 billion and a return of 1.9 percent, despite a strong negative effect from statutory currency hedges. The investment portfolio delivered a return of 15 percent excluding currency hedges.

Year-end report for 2021: Both net profit and the return for 2021 were record-high, with a net profit of SEK 22 billion and a return of just over 49 percent. Since its inception, AP6 has contributed SEK 57 billion to the pension system, most of which has been subsequent to the reformulation of its strategy in 2012.
