AMF invests SEK 200M in the Swedish airline Braathens Regional Airlines
As a result of the pandemic, Braathens Regional Airlines paused scheduled air traffic for just over a year and during that time underwent a formal restructuring (Swedish Chapter 11) which led to a much reduced cost level and significantly higher flexibility. At the same time, an ambitious vision was formulated for the re-launch of air traffic with high growth targets in combination with the goal of achieving net-zero.
Braathens Regional Airlines has had a prominent position for several years when it comes to climate conscious flying. The airline only operates modern turboprop aircraft, ATR 72-600, the world's most climate-efficient regional aircraft. Customers are already today given an option to fly with 100 percent sustainable aviation fuel and the entire company's operations are climate-compensated.
- We are a frontrunner in the strive towards zero carbon aviation. The experience and knowledge we have gathered means that we believe it is possible to reach net-zero already in 2030, says Ulrika Matsgård, CEO of Braathens Regional Airlines and continues: -We look forward to meet our customers' demands when it comes to accessibility, connectivity and sustainability. A prerequisite for this is that we continue to reduce both our and our customers' carbon dioxide emissions, primarily using sustainable aviation fuel and electric aviation as soon as this becomes a viable option.
- The investment AMF is now making in Braathens Regional Airlines is a confirmation of our future strategies and we are pleased to welcome such a prominent shareholder. They have invested in several exciting companies that, like us, are working for a more sustainable future and they have also shown both long-term and committed ownership, says Matsgård.
- Together with AMF, we will show that it is possible to fly efficiently and profitably with net zero emissions, says Per G Braathen. He is honored and grateful that AMF enters as a 19% owner and invests SEK 200 million in the company.
With SEK 800 billion in assets for approximately 4 million customers, AMF is one of Swedens leading pension companies and one of the largest owners on Nasdaq OMX Nordic Stockholm. AMF is owned equally by the Swedish Trade Union Confederation (LO) and the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise and operated on mutual principles, entailing that all profits are returned to the customers. AMF has an ambition to invest more in unlisted companies and alternative assets, and has recently made several investments in unlisted companies with a clear focus on sustainability.
- We see this as an exciting opportunity to invest in important Swedish infrastructure, and in a company with an ambitious growth and sustainability agenda. The endeavor to quickly become climate neutral is an important piece of the puzzle for commercial success in an industry is traditionally perceived to account for relatively large emissions. We believe that this has the potential to be a good investment for our savers, and we are looking forward to following BRA's continued growth and development as an active owner, says Anders Oscarsson, Head of Equities AMF.
