Project 1882 is launching operations in Ukraine

Since 1882, Project 1882’s (Djurens Rätt) mission has been to make a difference for the animals that are the most exploited and suffer the worst. A mission dedicated to the animals in Sweden but also globally. Now is the time for the organisation to take the next step with the establishment of a new branch in Ukraine. The needs of the war-torn country are immense and Project 1882 aspires to work both short and long-term to contribute towards change for the animals in Ukraine.

Since the full scale invasion last year, Project 1882 has worked actively to assist the affected animals in Ukraine, this in the form of various relief efforts and through financial contributions. Now Project 1882 has set up a Ukrainian equivalent of the organisation, the work is now being formalized and the Ukrainian branch can continue with direct aid efforts and at the same time develop the long-term work needed for animals in Ukraine.

– As one of the world's most active animal rights organisations, Project 1882 has a certain responsibility to contribute towards change for the animals that suffer the most. The animals in Ukraine need our help, now and in the future, and as our commitment is longstanding it has led us to support the formation of a new Ukrainian NGO, says Benny Andersson, CEO of Project 1882.

The Ukrainian organisation goes by the name Project 1882 Ukraine, which stems from the heritage and roots of the organisation that was founded in Sweden in 1882. Project 1882 will continue its work to help with disaster relief services as well as supporting Ukrainian volunteer groups working to help animals affected by the war. In Europe, Ukraine is also one of the countries that holds the most factory farms and where animal welfare issues have been a low priority, even before the war began.

– We are pleased that our unified work has begun, and we will continue our work to assist the evacuation of animals from the front line and the war. While planning and working for a future and for a more animal-friendly Ukraine, says Hanna Tereshko, Director of Project 1882 Ukraine.

Due to limited resources, the majority of animal welfare organisations in Ukraine have focused on wild and homeless animals. Project 1882's goal is to supplement this important work by contributing towards the change for the millions of animals that live and die in the country's factory farms. About half a billion broiler chickens are raised annually in Ukraine, where also 99.5% of hens in the egg industry live their entire lives in barren wire cages. The desire as well as the need for change is tremendous and Project 1882 will work to support the Ukrainian initiatives that have already commenced.
