Eco Requirements Threaten Europe's Food Production
Despite large subsidies, Europe's farmers are shutting down their farms. More than one in three farmers in the EU have disappeared between 2005 and 2020. The reason is the strict environmental regulations in the name of the Green Deal.

Since the 1960s, global grain production has increased significantly, largely thanks to modern pesticides and fertilizers. However, as part of the Green Deal, the European Commission aims to eliminate, among other things, the environmental impact of pesticides. This poses a threat to the EU’s agricultural sector.
Frustrated farmers, struggling to make ends meet due to reforms such as the Habitats Directive, the EU taxonomy, rising fuel prices, and targets for increased organic production, have protested in many countries. The protests have been so significant that the Commission is now being forced to roll back certain reforms. The question is—will it be enough?
In episode 5 of The Fall or Rise of Europe?, Henrik Jönsson discusses European agricultural policy with Danish author Bjørn Lomborg. They conclude that if the current policies remain in place, they will have severe negative consequences—both for global food production and for the EU’s food security.
