Slow growth threatens Europe's rearmament
As the United States’ commitment to NATO weakens, the pressure to strengthen European defense increases, and large sums will need to be borrowed. But without stronger economic growth, the EU lacks a stable foundation for long-term defense financing.

Henrik Jönsson and EPHI’s Series “The Fall or Rise of Europe?” continues.
After a long period of peace, Europe has awakened to a new reality—war at the borders of the Union. For years, European countries have relied on NATO, led by the United States, to guarantee their security. But new signals are coming from across the Atlantic. This means that EU member states must quickly strengthen their defenses against hostile foreign powers.
To deter attacks, Europe needs industry, energy, cybersecurity, food production, and emergency preparedness. The problem? In many of these areas, the EU is undermining its own member states through excessive bureaucracy and complex regulations. At the same time, the EU economy is falling behind both China and the United States.
That’s the argument put forward by Henrik Jönsson in the latest episode of The Fall or Rise of Europe?, where he is joined by Sweden’s Minister for Civil Defence, Carl-Oskar Bohlin, and author Johan Norberg (The Capitalist Manifesto, Progress), to discuss the EU’s capacity for rearmament.
