Today, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, presented the five-year plan for the EU's future competitiveness. "It is absolutely crucial for the future of our continent that the European Commission vigorously addresses competitiveness issues," says Sylvia Schwaag Serger, President of IVA.

"The competitiveness plan is presented less than a month after the new Commission took office, which is commendably swift. The ultra-rapid technological development in the world and the somewhat tense geopolitical situation mean that the EU needs to act united, swiftly and wisely. My assessment is that the Commission's competitiveness plan meets the needs.

A lack of investment capital means that many European entrepreneurs turn outside the union to scale up and grow. Today, a large portion of Europeans' pension funds are in funds across the Atlantic, where the capital is invested in American startups. I would rather see European pension funds contributing to European companies gaining access to capital.

It is absolutely crucial for the future of our continent that the European Commission vigorously addresses competitiveness issues. Speed is of the essence. Now, I look forward to the plan being implemented in all its parts," says Sylvia Schwaag Serger, President of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA).
