Henrik Jönsson and EPHI’s series The Fall or Rise of Europe? continues.

The Champagne market today generates €7.3 billion annually, and the number is expected to keep rising. The French themselves consume 43% of the bottles, with the rest exported. The top importing countries are the United States, followed by the United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, and Italy.
And Champagne can only legally be produced in the French region of the same name.

As we’ve shown in earlier episodes, the EU is increasingly undermining some of Europe’s finest industries—those associated with luxury and sophistication: fine food, fast cars, and now Champagne.

In the final episode of The Fall or Rise of Europe, Henrik Jönsson heads into the vineyards to discover how this legendary drink is made—and what exactly the EU holds against it.
