The progress of the new European Digital Identity Wallet was showcased in Stockholm as a comprehensive and secure digital solution for payments, travel and business
The EU Digital Wallet Consortium (EWC), a large-scale pilot project for the implementation of the European Digital Identity Wallet, has held its 4th General Assembly in Stockholm. The new digital way of identification, set to launch in 2026, will offer a new way of securely managing and accessing personal identification in areas such as banking, academia, and tourism.

This meeting highlighted the work the consortium has done on testing the European Digital Wallet for travel documents, digital identity of companies and payments. A lot of work has been done and still lies ahead to address the challenges of implementing the EU Digital Identity Wallet in the planned time frame.
Swedish Companies Registration Office, Bolagsverket, is the coordinator of the EWC and hosted this General Assembly with nearly 120 representatives from all over Europe. The Assembly was opened by Sara Modig, State Secretary of Ministry of Climate and Enterprise.
The EU Digital Wallet Consortium (EWC), one of the four public-private consortia launched by the European Commission to test and develop the different everyday uses of the European Digital Wallet (a digital identity wallet with which citizens and companies of EU member states will be able to store and digitally manage their identity and credentials securely), has just finished its General Assembly in Stockholm.
Cross-border travel, payments and business wallet
Organized by Bolagsverket, this assembly brought together representatives of several Member States, the European Commission, businesses, and universities from the 27 EU Member States. The aim of this fourth and last assembly was to share the progress of the large-scale pilots specifically on the use of the European Digital Identity Wallet for cross-border travel, payments and the business wallet or legal person digital identity at the legal and administrative level. These large-scale pilots were tested with Swedish and international public and private entities such as Amadeus SAS, Bosch, Visa Europe Ltd, Worldline, iGrant.io, Signicat AS, Intesi Group, SICPA Spain, the University of the Aegean, the Chamber of Commerce of the Netherlands, and of course the Swedish Companies Registration Office (Bolagsverket), and 77 other partners.
The General Assembly was opened by the State Secretary of Ministry of Climate and Enterprise, Sara Modig. Sara took the opportunity to express the importance of the EU Digital Identity Wallet when she opened the EWC General Assembly: “The European Digital Identity Wallet is an important pillar to ensure the internal market and the four freedoms of movement in the EU”.
– We are proud to host the final EWC General Assembly in Stockholm, highlighting the important progress made over the past two years. As digital identity wallets begin rolling out in late 2026, they are set to become a key part of our digital lives – especially for travel, payments, and business. The great interest in this work really shows the value of public-private partnerships and Swedish leadership in the area of digital identity, says David Magård from Bolagsverket, the coordinator of the consortium.
Reduced administration for companies
During these two days, the progress was discussed to prepare for the deadline of December 2026 for issuing an EU digital identity wallet by all Member States. The work on the large-scale pilots is instrumental in helping the ecosystem implement and apply the wallet for the benefit of European citizens and companies. All this, from the conviction of the great benefits that a secure digital identity will bring when traveling, paying and reducing administration for companies. In short, to make life easier and digitally safer for European citizens and businesses.
– Using your EUDI wallet to book a ferry, check in for your flight and provide your biometrics for a smooth airport experience, register at your hotel, verify your age for museums and events and to receive tickets and receipts was positively piloted with a public audience. Moreover, EUDI wallet-authenticated payments have been developed and tested by real people, with real data and on a production environment. These are huge steps forward in eIDAS-land, and the use cases have proven to provide real benefits! according to Laurent Loup from SICPA.
– We are super pleased to see that the achievements in this project will continue in the next pilots Aptitude and WeBuild. We can’t wait for the next evolutions of our use cases and are confident that the groundwork done by EWC will eventually lead to real citizen benefits by the end of next year, says Laurent.
– The LSP was a success through the great collaboration and hard work in the consortium and we realized that the European Digital Identity wallet will change the way we interact digitally. It will give back control of data to the owners and it is a new way of using your identity online. It is therefore very important that advocacy and education about the EUDI Wallet is done in advance of the launch to explain the benefits of being in control of your own data”, says Annet Steenbergen, independent advisor.
The EU Digital Identity Wallet
The European Commission's ambitious goal is to ensure that the European Digital Identity Wallet hands European citizens a digital identity that at its core will contain essential identifying attributes such as surname, first name and date of birth issued by each Member State to their citizens, known as the PID (Person Identification Data). This PID is the anchor of the EU Digital Identity Wallet and the basis for adding other credentials, such as driving license, health insurance, educational degrees, bank account, certificate of residence, and many other credentials issued by private entities, such as banks, airports, and hotels.
This identity wallet supports access to government services but is furthermore intended to allow you to securely store and share, for example, educational and academic credentials, a health ID to access prescriptions at the pharmacy, your health insurance card and social security data, which can be verified even abroad, and perform other daily tasks more easily, such as registering a new prepaid SIM card that you have just received or opening a bank account in another EU member state. This wallet will also allow you to do business in a more fluid way, allowing citizens to sign contracts by creating a secure digital signature for any document.
The implementation of this innovative system will also serve to fight fraud, an invisible crime that is widespread in the Euro zone, where every year an increasing number of consumers are targeted by sophisticated scams, both online and offline. 63% of EU citizens, according to the EU document “European Union Agency For Fundamental Rights, Your rights matter: data protection and privacy”, are in favor of a unified and secure digital ID system for all online services.
However, as has been shown in Stockholm, the challenge is of considerable proportions, as it requires strict compliance with the high security requirements of the government, which will probably slow down the full implementation of the European Digital Wallet with all these functionalities, beyond its basic use as a tool for storing and managing the identity of citizens and companies.

För att uppnå detta krävs möjlighet att dela information mellan oss myndigheter och effektiva åtgärder när vi identifierar avvikelser, säger Bolagsverkets generaldirektör Inga Otmalm.
