Sahlgrenska University Hospital and Intuitive join forces for innovative minimally-invasive treatments
Sahlgrenska University Hospital and Intuitive have entered into a strategic partnership that will focus on training and clinical development to enable access to more innovative treatment methods.

The strategic partnership underscores Sahlgrenska University Hospital's aspiration to take a leading role in more effective treatment methods that are gentler for patients and optimize the resources of hospitals and society. The collaboration will initially focus on education and training, productivity, clinical outcome and health economics as well as future innovation.
”With this collaboration we will have the possibility to improve the clinical outcome and optimize the productivity when it comes to robotic-assisted surgery as well as in the development of minimally invasive surgery,” says Boubou Hallberg, CEO of Sahlgrenska University Hospital.
Exploring future advances in patient treatments
Robotic-assisted surgery has been used for more than 20 years in Sweden, and there are now over 130 systems for da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery in the Nordic region, with over 200.000 operations performed.
Sahlgrenska University Hospital provides general surgery, as well as highly specialized care, in several important areas. An increasing number of patient groups are benefiting from robotic-assisted surgery, with a notable rise in its use for benign procedures.
"Sahlgrenska has been at the forefront in advancing the benefits of robotic-assisted surgery in Sweden, which has become an established treatment optionacross various fields. Together, we are now setting the stage for improved outcomes in additional areas. We are excited to formalize our partnership with Sahlgrenska as we continue to collaborate on delivering world-class innovative healthcare,” says David Lang, Regional Director Nordics at Intuitive.
Next-generation medical technology
Sahlgrenska University Hospital and Intuitive plan to establish collaborative efforts to introduce robotic-assisted surgery earlier in medical and surgical training and increase the number of surgeons who are able to perform those surgical procedures. The partnership will also enable the potential for better productivity, clinical outcomes and health economics by exploring and analyzing available data at the hospital. Furthermore, the two parties will explore minimally invasive surgical methods and new clinical applications.
