26.6.2025 09:57:00 CEST | Sahlgrenska Universitetssjukhuset | Press Release
With the initiative Chalmers Sahlgrenska Health Engineering Alliance, Chalmers University of Technology, Sahlgrenska Academy and the Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Gothenburg, and Sahlgrenska University Hospital are deepening their collaboration to advance leading healthcare and research both nationally and internationally.

Western Sweden has a long tradition of research collaboration in the fields of science, health, and technology. To strengthen this, the parties have now signed a memorandum of understanding to continue working on development, research, and innovation.
“We know from international examples in both the US and Europe that close collaborations between technical universities and university hospitals can be a catalyst for innovation,” says Martin Nilsson Jacobi, President of Chalmers. “It creates the shortest possible distance between excellent research and direct societal benefit. It also provides a vital boost to the West Swedish medtech and life science sectors.”
The combined competence and expertise within the Chalmers Sahlgrenska Health Engineering Alliance presents an opportunity to work with innovation on critical global health challenges and will generate several synergies and opportunities for national and international collaboration.
“Sahlgrenska Academy has everything from strong basic medical research to high-quality translational and clinical research. With this alliance, our opportunities for innovation and application will be strengthened, especially in the field of medical technology. Together with the other partners and the strong life science sector in Western Sweden, we will be able to take the next step toward excellence and innovation,” says Jenny Nyström, Professor and Dean of Sahlgrenska Academy, the medical faculty at the University of Gothenburg.
The parties will jointly explore and evaluate potential areas of collaboration where there is potential to lead national research and healthcare.
“Joining forces, we have a true opportunity to achieve results in the transformation of healthcare. With the Chalmers Sahlgrenska Health Engineering Alliance, we aim to become national leaders in research and healthcare. Within five to ten years, we also aim to become leading in Europe, providing citizens with the best possible healthcare,” says Boubou Hallberg, CEO of Sahlgrenska University Hospital.
“Our faculty is already strong in life sciences with several interesting research projects that could benefit healthcare in the future. Through this collaboration, the parties can effectively leverage each other’s strengths,” says Göran Hilmersson, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Gothenburg.
