New LBG station at Herrbeta rest area strengthens Nordic energy transition for St1 and St1 Biokraft

Share

The Nordic energy transition takes another step forward as St1 and St1 Biokraft open a new liquified biogas (LBG) refueling station at Herrbeta rest area, strategically located between Linköping and Norrköping in Sweden. The station – situated next to St1 Herrbeta South bound – represents a key milestone in the companies’ efforts to promote sustainable transport solutions for heavy transportation.

A strategic location for greener freight

Herrbeta is recognized as one of Sweden’s top rest areas and sits along some of the county’s busiest freight routes – making it an ideal location for sustainable refueling. By building infrastructure where demand is at its highest, St1 and St1 Biokraft are helping more transport operators switch to fossil-free alternatives.

"Herrbeta is a vital piece in our journey toward fossil-free transport. Its location along the E4 makes sustainable refueling easily accessible for our customers. This station adds to our growing network of LBG sites, and together with upcoming locations, we’re giving heavy vehicles the real power to transition", says Fredrik Nordin, Head of Business Development Downstream at St1 Biokraft.

The expansion continues

Herrbeta is now the seventh station in St1’s expanding Nordic LBG network. The companies aim to establish 50 LBG stations by 2028. Five are already operational in Finland, and the first Swedish station opened earlier this year in Torsvik. Additional sites in Sweden and the first stations in Norway are expected to launch this autumn. St1’s vision is to be the leading producer and seller of CO₂-aware energy, and the company already operates a well-established network of compressed biogas (CBG) stations in Sweden.

"Launching our second LBG station in Sweden marks a major milestone in our commitment to building a sustainable energy system for future transport. The demand for gas-powered vehicles is growing among logistics and freight operators, and we’re proud to meet our customers’ needs with an expanding LBG network. Biomethane is a highly competitive fuel and a key solution for reducing emissions from heavy transport", says Mats Rylander, Head of Sales at St1 Sweden.

Östergötland’s central location and strong agricultural base also provide favorable conditions for biogas production. As a result, St1 Biokraft is planning a production facility in Västerlösa, outside of Linköping. The facility will have a capacity of approximately 210 GWh.

About St1 Biokraft

St1 Biokraft is a joint venture between St1 and HitecVision, together with Aneo. The company manages the entire biogas value chain from sourcing feedstock to sales and distribution. St1 Biokraft currently operates 12 production and upgrading plants, with four more under development: three in Finland and one in Mönsterås, Sweden. By 2030, the company aims to produce 3 TWh of biomethane and achieve 6 TWh in sales, enabling significant climate benefits – particularly within the transport sector.
