“I can confirm that the turnout is at a level comparable to the last two elections, even if the figure is slightly lower before all the votes have been counted,” says Nils Warmland, leader of the church elections. “This year’s elections consolidate the significantly higher levels of turnout in recent elections compared to earlier in the 21st century.”
The preliminary results show that the green nomination groups, De gröna i Svenska kyrkan (Greens in the Church of Sweden, DGSK) and Himmel och Jord (Heaven and earth), HoJ, are performing strongly in the elections. DGSK is more than doubling its seats from 8 to 18, and HoJ looks set to cross the new two-percent threshold, winning six seats.
The Social Democrats and Partipolitiskt obundna i Svenska kyrkan (Non-Partisans of the Church of Sweden, POSK) are consolidating their positions as the biggest nomination groups in the General Synod. The third biggest nomination group, the Centre Party, is set to lose several seats.
Alternative for Sweden (AfS) will not manage to make it over the new two-percent threshold, losing its place in the upcoming General Synod.
A preliminary result for all levels – the General Synod, the Diocesan Council and the Parish Assembly – is expected to be finalised early on Monday morning.
The election count, including advance votes received late, postal votes, votes from abroad and votes for specific individuals, is expected to be finalised in about four weeks’ time.
