General Synod to open next week

This year’s General Synod will begin with a service of worship and formal opening ceremony at 2 pm on 30 September in Uppsala Cathedral.

The opening ceremony will take place in the presence of H.M. The King and H.M. The Queen, Minister for Social Affairs and Public Health Jakob Forssmed, County Governor Stefan Attefall, representatives from the Anglican Church of Ireland and the bishops of the Church of Sweden.
Bishop Fredrik Modéus of Växjö diocese will lead the service.
The service will begin at 2 pm and the formal opening ceremony at around 3 pm. Both will take place in Uppsala Cathedral. After the opening, the General Synod will move to the University Main Building for committee work.
This year’s General Synod will consider 128 motions, seven written communications and four annual reports.
The service marking the opening of the General Synod will also be broadcast live on the Church of Sweden’s website.

The 2025 sessions of the General Synod
Session 1: 30 September – 3 October in the University Main Building in Uppsala.
Session 2: 17–19 November at Uppsala Konsert & Kongress in Uppsala.
Election meeting for the 2026–2029 term
The newly elected members of the General Synod will be welcomed and then come together for an election meeting on 19–20 November in Uppsala. The first step is to elect the officers of the General Synod: the Chair, the First and Second Vice-Chairs, along with the Secretary, Nominating Committee and verifiers of the minutes.
After that, the Central Board of the Church of Sweden, Doctrinal Commission of the General Synod, Fee Board, Bishops’ Disciplinary Committee, Election Supervisory Committee, Canon Law Board, Appeals Committee, members and deputies of the cathedral chapter in Visby diocese and auditors are elected.
Committee elections will take place during the first session of the General Synod in 2026.

Journalists and photographers covering the opening service + introduction in Uppsala Cathedral must wear a name badge.
