December at Skansen: a world-unique Christmas experience in Stockholm
In December, the iconic open-air museum Skansen offers an immersive holiday experience unlike any other – where snow-dusted landscapes, glowing lanterns, and the scent of mulled wine meet centuries of Swedish tradition. Set on Djurgården in central Stockholm, Skansen invites guests from around the world to step into a living heritage of Swedish Christmas celebrations.

Skansen is the world’s oldest open-air museum and a global model for preserving cultural heritage. During the festive season, the park comes alive with Christmas as it was once celebrated – from candlelit Lucia processions to storytelling by the fire, folk music performances, and animals in their winter coats.
At the heart of the experience is the legendary Christmas market, held since 1903, where stalls brim with hand-dipped candles, woolen mittens, marzipan figures, artisanal delicacies and one-of-a-kind holiday gifts. Visitors can savor classic seasonal flavors such as smoked fish, gingerbread, roasted almonds and mulled wine, all in a setting rich with nostalgia and atmosphere.
This is a place where generations gather – where tradition becomes tangible, and where the winter season is celebrated with both solemnity and joy. With free admission for children and a full seasonal program included in standard entry, Skansen welcomes guests of all ages to take part in this beloved Swedish celebration.
