An Inspirational Boost for Swedish Breeders at Gothenburg Horse Show

Swedish horse breeding is currently facing an economic downturn, and several experts are warning of a potential shortage of horses within the next few years. This is something Gothenburg Horse Show, Hyperion Stud, and not least the breeding association SWB are determined to counteract. As a result, more than 100 breeders were invited to a full day of inspiration and knowledge-sharing at Scandinavium.

All of SWB’s so-called Plus Members were invited to take part in the initiative, offering them the opportunity to gain inspiration, build new connections, and bring valuable insights back to their own breeding operations.
“The goal is truly to show appreciation for the breeders and to let them be part of this journey. Many of us lose contact with our horses once they are sold at a young age, while at the same time we are fully occupied with our work at home. It’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture,” said Vicky Castegren.
Vicky is herself a breeder with operations in the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden, with her base in Virginia. Her passion for the breeders’ role in the sport is unmistakable.
“I see this as an opportunity for breeders to be seen and to step into the spotlight for a moment. Most of the time, we work quietly behind the scenes—late nights in the stable, in the middle of the night, wearing muddy boots while helping a foal into the world. We keep going until everyone feels that they, too, have a chance,” she continued.
Veterinarian and breeder Sune Jerre took part in both the breeders’ gathering and the competitions, where one of his horses competed in the SWB Trophy.
“I have been attending Gothenburg Horse Show for 49 years now, so I know what it’s all about. This is a very good initiative. We need to do everything we can to highlight and support the breeders,” he said.
Show jumper Yvonne Österholm, winner of the seven-year-old class, also expressed her appreciation for the initiative.
“The breeder of my horse, Per-Arne Persson, truly felt: ‘It will be so nice to come back here again this year.’ Organising this type of competition is extremely valuable for Swedish breeders, and it is deeply appreciated,” she said.
SWB’s CEO Anette Graf also shared her optimism about the future.
“Breeders need goals, inspiration, and influence from one another—as well as the courage to continue breeding horses. I hope they go home feeling, ‘I’m going to breed this year.’ We know the past few years have been challenging, but things are looking brighter now. Without more horses, we risk facing a shortage in the near future,” she said.
During the day, the breeders also attended a seminar with Vicky Castegren and Breeders of the Year Lisa Thim and Emma Thim, which sparked lively engagement and discussion.
“There were some really meaningful conversations about challenges, motivation, and why we are involved in the sport and in breeding horses. I am very pleased with how the day turned out—it was a great success,” said Anette Graf.
The evening programme concluded with a clinic on young horse education, led by Dutch rider Wilhelm Greve.
In addition to Swedish breeders, several Nordic colleagues were also present—marking the beginning of a collaboration that the organisers hope to develop further in the future.
