PARIS, FRANCE – The Swedish architecture studio OKIDOKI has been honored with the prestigious International Award for Wood Architecture (IAWA) 2026 for the new railway station building in Varberg, Sweden. Emerging victorious in the "Best New Construction" category, the Swedish project stood out among a shortlist of seven premier European timber developments.

The award was presented on February 26 at the 8th International Wood Construction Forum in Paris. This marks the second major international accolade for Varberg railway station, following its success at the UIC Railway Station Awards last year.

“This is OKIDOKI’s most significant international recognition to date,” says Rickard Stark, Partner at OKIDOKI. “Our design philosophy, which blends traditional materials with modern innovation, clearly resonates on the European stage.”

A Coastal Landmark Crafted in Timber
Constructed using glulam and cross-laminated timber (CLT), Varberg railway station is designed as a modern tribute to the city’s heritage as a seaside resort. The architecture is defined by its overhanging corners that appear to lift from the ground — a nod to the nearby sea.

The jury highlighted the project's seamless integration of art and architecture. In collaboration with artist Juri Markkula, the station features "Windy," an installation where wooden window decorations appear to be dissolved by the coastal breeze.

Setting a New Standard for Infrastructure
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the station serves as a blueprint for sustainable public infrastructure. By utilizing a timber structure, recycled materials, and integrated solar energy, the building meets the rigorous Miljöbyggnad Gold environmental certification.

“The award places this Swedish infrastructure project at the very top tier of European architecture,” says Alexander Nyberg, IAWA jury member. “The jury particularly appreciated how a clean, simple concept was executed with such consistency and success.”
