Swedish Indie Game Sells Over 400,000 Copies in Its First Month

Romestead is a Roman-themed survival and town-building game where players explore, build settlements, and work together to restore a fallen empire. The game launched in Early Access at the end of May and has quickly attracted a large international player base.

Selling more than 400,000 copies in a single month is rare even by international standards. Thousands of games are released on Steam every year, but only a small fraction reach sales figures that can be described as true breakout successes. For an independent Swedish game studio, the achievement is particularly remarkable.

“We are incredibly grateful for the reception from players around the world. It has been amazing to see the community around Romestead grow so quickly,” says Samuel Blomqvist, CEO and co-founder of Beartwigs.

Beartwigs was founded by Samuel Blomqvist and Björn Detterfelt, who first met while studying at Linköping University. What began as a student project has grown into a professional game studio with players across the globe.

The studio also has a long-standing connection to East Sweden Game, the regional initiative that has been working to develop the games industry in Östergötland since 2017. Beartwigs has been part of the community from the very beginning and is today one of several examples of local game developers growing from early-stage ideas into internationally successful companies.

For the publisher Three Friends, the success also marks an important milestone. Romestead is the first game released by the publisher, giving a strong start to its mission of helping promising game studios reach a global audience.

“400,000 copies sold in a month is an incredible achievement. It shows that a lot of people are thinking about the Roman Empire, but this is only the first step on Romestead’s journey. Who knows how far this road will take us?” says Albert Säfström, Producer at Three Friends.

Romestead is available on Steam and continues to be developed in close collaboration with its community.
