Turning cement production into a carbon sink.
29.6.2026 08:26:00 CEST | RISE Research Institutes of Sweden | Press Release
RISE is to lead an international project demonstrating a world-first value chain that turns cement production into a carbon sink.
The international research project CarbonCrete+ – CO₂-Free Clinker and Carbon-Negative Building Materials has been awarded funding through the Clean Energy Transition Partnership (CETP). Coordinated by RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, the project will demonstrate a world-first integrated value chain that can transform cement and concrete production from a major source of emissions into a carbon sink.
The cement industry accounts for a significant share of global CO₂ emissions and remains one of the hardest sectors to decarbonise. CarbonCrete+ is the first project to integrate CO₂-free clinker production, high-purity carbon capture directly at source and large-scale mineralisation of captured CO₂ into aggregates, binders and concrete within a single operational value chain.
By treating captured carbon dioxide as a resource rather than waste, the project will demonstrate a circular production model in which emissions are converted into valuable construction materials.
"RISE contributes with research, testing and a systems perspective to accelerate the transition to a sustainable society. CarbonCrete+ is an example of how international collaboration can turn research into practical solutions by developing and demonstrating technologies that reduce the climate impact of the construction sector," says Jan Suchorzewski, Market manager at RISE and Coordinator of the CarbonCrete+ project.
If successful, the project could pave the way for substantially lower emissions from cement production while enabling long-term carbon storage in buildings and infrastructure. It also has the potential to support a more circular use of industrial residues and improve the cost-efficiency of carbon capture.
The consortium brings together partners from Sweden, France, the Netherlands and India, covering the entire value chain—from electrified clinker production and CO₂ mineralisation to cement manufacturing, materials research and industrial validation. The partners are RISE, SaltX Technology, Holcim Innovation Center, Paebbl, Université Gustave Eiffel, CSIR–Central Building Research Institute and the National Council for Cement and Building Materials.
CarbonCrete+ will run for 36 months from autumn 2026 with a total budget of EUR 4.2 million. The project is co-funded by the Swedish Energy Agency, ANR (France) and DST (India).

RISE Joins International Initiative on Brain Health and Economic Resilience11.8.2026 06:52:00 CEST | Press Release
How do we build competitiveness in an era of AI, skills shortages and rising levels of mental ill-health? This is the question at the heart of the launch of the international Brain Health for Economic Resilience Commission. RISE is participating in the initiative, which brings together leading experts in neuroscience, economics, societal development, and innovation.
RISE supports the upscaling of battery technology for energy storage3.7.2026 08:37:00 CEST | Press Release
RISE is now strengthening its collaboration with Vanadis Energy to industrialise zinc-ion batteries and vanadium-based solid-state battery technology, which can be used for energy storage. The aim is to build a robust Swedish industrial base.
RISE can now test bidirectional charging between electrical vehicles and grid23.6.2026 06:01:00 CEST | Press Release
RISE Research Institutes of Swedens new test platform for bidirectional charging between electrical vehicles and grid covers the complete chain from the onboard charger of the vehicle to the charging infrastructure. It is among the first in Europe to support AC charging according to the new ISO standard. First to try out the new test platform is Toyota Industries Corporation. The platform is situated at SEEL Swedish Electric Transport Laboratory, a test environment for electrified transport systems.
From Idea to an Internationally Recognised Innovation Environment – ICE Datacenter Celebrates Ten Years17.6.2026 15:32:00 CEST | Press Release
Since its launch in 2016, RISE’s ICE Datacenter facility in Luleå has developed into an internationally recognised innovation environment involving more than one hundred companies. ICE Datacenter plays a leading role in a sector that is at the heart of societal development.
SEEL achieves TISAX certification across all facilities3.6.2026 05:20:00 CEST | Press Release
As one of Europe’s most advanced environments for research and testing of electrified transportation systems, SEEL must meet stringent requirements for information security and prototype protection to address the automotive industry’s specific needs. The test center’s two facilities in Säve and Nykvarn are now certified under TISAX, the automotive industry’s common standard for the secure handling of data, development information, and prototype protection. Together with the previously certified Battery Safety Lab in Borås, this means that all three SEEL facilities now meet TISAX requirements.
