21.9.2026 10:53:31 CEST | news aktuell GmbH | Press Release
- Latest step in Grünenthal’s strategy to acquire established medicines that serve clear medical needs, leverage its commercial and operational capabilities, and drive growth.
- Stivarga® (regorafenib) is an established oral treatment for certain advanced cancers, including metastatic colorectal cancer, gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST) and hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer). It is approved and available in more than 90 markets worldwide.
- Grünenthal has invested around €2.6 billion in successful M&A transactions since 2017, significantly strengthening its profitability and further funding its innovative research pipeline.
Aachen, Germany, 21 September 2026 – Grünenthal, a global leader in pain management and research, today announced an agreement with Bayer AG to acquire Stivarga®, an oral treatment for specific advanced cancers, for up to €375 million. The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, including approval by the relevant regulatory authorities. The acquisition is expected to close by the end of 2026 or early 2027.
Stivarga® (regorafenib) is an oral multkinase inhibitor indicated for metastatic colorectal cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma and gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST) in patients who have already been treated with, or who cannot be given, other available treatments. It is approved and available in more than 90 markets worldwide.
“This acquisition is a strong strategic fit for Grünenthal and reflects our disciplined M&A strategy of acquiring established medicines that address clear and ongoing medical needs and create long-term value,” said Gabriel Baertschi, CEO, Grünenthal. “Stivarga® has a well-established role in patient care and the transaction is immediately accretive to our business. By leveraging the strength of our commercial and operational expertise, we see clear opportunities to maximise the value of the medicine and support Grünenthal’s long-term growth.”
Loss of exclusivity for Stivarga® is anticipated in 2029 in the European Union and in 2030 in the United States (US). Grünenthal estimates that Stivarga® may contribute a positive impact on its consolidated EBITDA of up to approximately €100 million for the year ending 31 December 2027, based on an analysis of the information made available to Grünenthal from Bayer and assuming closing by the end of 2026 or the beginning of 2027, as well as a full-year consolidation.
The acquisition is the latest development in Grünenthal’s M&A strategy and follows the successful integration of several important medicines across a range of health conditions, including the global rights to Nebido™, the rights to Cialis® in Mexico, Brazil and Colombia, the European rights to Crestor™ and Nexium™, and the global rights to Vimovo™ (ex-US and Japan), Zomig™ (ex-Japan) and Qutenza™. In addition to asset acquisitions, earlier this year, Grünenthal acquired full ownership of Grünenthal Meds, a previously joint venture with Kyowa Kirin International to market its established medicines portfolio, and, in 2024, acquired the US company Valinor Pharma and the product Movantik®. The company has invested around €2.6 billion in successful M&A transactions since 2017.

S&Ds to von der Leyen: Europe must deliver for people and strengthen its sovereignty16.9.2026 07:36:46 CEST | Press Release
STRASBOURG, 15 September 2026 Ahead of Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s State of the Union address and debate in Strasbourg on September 16, 2026, the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament (S&D) call for a change of direction: away from deregulation and towards better living and working conditions for Europeans, tangible social justice, and a stronger, more sovereign Europe. Iratxe García Pérez, president of the S&D Group in the European Parliament, said: “Europe is facing a choice. Not simply between different policies or political parties, but between two very different visions of our future. One vision is built on fear, power without limits, nationalism and the rule of the strongest. The other vision is the Europe we believe in: a Europe that protects its people, defends democracy and international law, fights climate change, guarantees social rights and has the strength to decide its own future.”* A Europe that delivers for its people The S&D Group has deli
Europe’s IPO problem starts before the stock exchange: New study calls for deeper markets, more investment and larger listings15.9.2026 09:00:00 CEST | Press Release
Europe is losing the IPO race. Its companies are going public at too small a size. The number of new companies listing in Europe is behind that of the US and their value has dropped over the last decade. Europe faces a ‘scale-up gap’: while it produces innovative startups, they struggle to grow across Europe and access capital for their expansion. Strong public equity markets provide capital to promising firms and an ‘exit’ for venture capital and private equity investors.

For the sake of democracy, Europe must get its governance act together, urges new report9.9.2026 13:27:50 CEST | Press Release
Los Angeles/DNA - Although Europe’s place among the world’s democracies remains at the top of the heap, the latest research from governance experts warns that the continent is slipping from its lofty perch as the runaway global leader. According to the report - based on the European Berggruen Governance Index (EBGI), which analyses states’ governance performance according to the quality of democracy, government, and lives of citizens - European states’ years-long dominance is stagnating. Over time, this could undermine democratic accountability and raise questions about the region’s long-term stability. The findings of the report, titled “Sustaining and Expanding Europe’s High Governance Performance”, show that complacency, what researchers refer to as the “silent killer of governance”, is a cause for concern that must be addressed by a renewed focus on bolstering democracy and engaging citizens. The report was produced by researchers at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA),
