General Synod to start next week

“The Church of Sweden is a democratic national church in which everyone’s vote counts,” says newly elected chair of the General Synod, Erik Vikström. “For this reason, all 251 members meeting for the first time is both a solemn and enjoyable occasion.”

One guest who has been specially invited to the opening is the Bishop of Greenland, Paneeraq Siegstad Munk, who will be giving a welcome speech. She is leading the Lutheran Church in Greenland at a time when the island has been receiving increased international attention.

“Bishop Paneeraq’s participation offers a current perspective on issues related to peace, international security and indigenous identity,” says Erik Vikström.

The General Synod will begin with a service of worship in Uppsala Cathedral at 2 pm on 29 September led by the Bishop of Uppsala diocese, Karin Johannesson. The formal opening of the General Synod will take place immediately after the service.

During the opening of the General Synod, Archbishop Martin Modéus will present the Stefansmedaljen medal of merit, named after the first Archbishop of Uppsala. The award is presented to representatives and members of the Church of Sweden for meritorious initiatives in the church and society. The name of the award recipient will be made public when the medal is awarded.

The Archbishop’s Stefansmedaljen is a medal of merit awarded by the Archbishop of Uppsala diocese to highly deserving members of the Church of Sweden for their outstanding contributions to the church.

Name badges will be provided by press officer Lina Beutler at 1:30 pm on 29 September by the press/photography seats in Uppsala Cathedral, in the north side aisle by the central altar.
