26 December is the 20th anniversary of the tsunami in South-East Asia that took many lives and affected us all. At the initiative of the King and Queen, a national memorial service will be held in Uppsala Cathedral and it will be broadcast live on Swedish Television.

The General Synod is the highest decision-making body of the Church of Sweden, deciding on issues common to the entire Church of Sweden. This year’s theme, ‘The Church in the Public Space’, addresses the place of the church in society, locally and globally.

Almost a year ago, Archbishop Antje Jackelén made an official apology from the Church of Sweden to the Sámi people in Uppsala Cathedral. The apology will be made once again on 23 October, this time in Luleå Cathedral.

Bishop Martin Modéus received 59% of the votes in today’s Archbishop election. He will thus become the new Archbishop of the Church of Sweden, succeeding Antje Jackelén, who retires on 30 October. Martin Modéus will be received as the new Archbishop on 4 December.

Bishop Martin Modéus, Linköping, received the most votes in today’s election to Archbishop of the Church of Sweden. In second place was Bishop Johan Dalman, Strängnäs. As neither of them received more than 50% of the votes, a second round between the two of them will be held on 8 June.

We now have the preliminary results of the nomination election ahead of the Archbishop election. Bishop Martin Modéus received the most votes, followed by Bishop Johan Dalman and Bishop Mikael Mogren. The process will now continue with a hearing of the candidates on 22 April.

Archbishop Antje Jackelén is retiring in autumn 2022. At a service on Sunday 30 October, she will lay down the staff and cross, which will be passed on to the next archbishop.

During the special service of worship concluding the General Synod on 24 November, Archbishop Antje Jackelén will make an official apology from the Church of Sweden to the Sami for historical abuse.

The general subcommittee of the Central Board of the Church of Sweden has today decided upon eight commitments to serve as a starting point for its work on the reconciliation process with the Sámi people over the next 10 years. Support for these commitments has previously been secured in a consultation process with the thirteen dioceses of the Church of Sweden, which are behind the decision.

The Church’s Book of Worship, translated into Sweden’s five minority languages - Finnish, Meänkieli, Northern Sami, Lule Sami and Southern Sami - is used.

During Holy Week, the Church of Sweden will webcast seven services from Uppsala Cathedral. There will be a service every day from Monday 6 April.

The General Synod will reconvene in Uppsala next week for its plenary working session and decisions. The single biggest item for decision is the proposal for the new Book of Worship, which has resulted in to 52 motions. During the session, this year’s cultural grants will also be awarded. Directly after the end of the General Synod, the newly elected General Synod for the mandate period 2018–2021 will gather for an election meeting.

On 31 October, it will be 500 years since Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of All Saints’ Church (more commonly referred to as Castle Church) in Wittenberg. It will be celebrated for a whole week, with divine services, newly composed music, public lectures and other events where the significance of the Reformation for Sweden will be in focus.

1 september invigs utställningen Visitation Reformation, med fem verk i Uppsala domkyrka och ett verk på Uppsala konstmuseum av den amerikanske videokonstnären Bill Viola. Avsikten är att ett av verken ska förvärvas för permanent installation i Uppsala domkyrka.

Five works by American video artist Bill Viola will be exhibited in Uppsala Cathedral in the autumn. The Cathedral Parish intends to acquire one of the works as part of Reformation Year 2017.

Fem verk av den amerikanske videokonstnären Bill Viola kommer i höst att visas i Uppsala domkyrka. Avsikten är att domkyrkoförsamlingen ska förvärva ett av verken. Satsningen ingår i det pågående Reformationsåret 2017.

The review group for the Book of Worship concluded its final meeting today. The final draft of the revised Book of Worship will be submitted to the Central Board of the Church of Sweden later in the spring. “We have now produced a draft version of the Book of Worship for the whole of the Church of Sweden, a practical book designed to work well in all churches, ranging from big cathedrals to small chapels. We think we have produced a good draft version that the whole of the group stand behind,” says Chair of the review group, Bishop Emeritus Esbjörn Hagberg.

“Enlightenment” will be the main theme for the 2017 Book Fair in Gothenburg. This theme links to Reformation Year 2017, and the Church of Sweden will have a greater role than usual at the Book Fair.
