Skansen invites guests to experience Easter the Swedish way – with traditional crafts, music, folklore and festive activities for all ages. Set in Stockholm’s open-air museum and zoo, the Easter program brings to life customs from Sweden’s past while offering hands-on activities and storytelling that delight modern-day families.
Easter through the ages
Skansen brings Swedish Easter traditions to life across several historical settings. Guests observe a somber Good Friday in 1870s Halland and explore what Easter Saturday and Sunday looked like in the 1920s and 1930s.
Crafts, folklore, and folk music
Visitors of all ages can try their hand at traditional Ukrainian egg painting. Skansen’s heritage group helps children craft their own authentic broomsticks – a must for flying off to the mythical Blåkulla on Maundy Thursday. And guests aged 9 and up can experience traditional blacksmithing and create a keepsake to take home.
Around the fire tales of Easter witches and magical spirits are shared throughout the day. Skansen’s own folk musicians perform traditional tunes all Easter weekend, and on Easter Sunday, April 20, folk trio Kviga gives a special spring concert in the beautiful Seglora church.
Fun and learning for children on Easter break
Throughout the Easter holiday, children are invited to take part in playful and educational activities. Try traditional Easter crafting or transform into Easter witches with face painting. Join “Kackelklubben” where zoo keepers share their knowledge about hens and eggs, or take part in the Egg School at Lill-Skansen to learn fascinating facts about nature’s ingenious invention – the egg.
Free entry for children in costume
On Maundy Thursday, April 17, all children aged 4 to 15 dressed in Easter costume receive free admission to Skansen.
