Bildmuseet: After Tomorrow at Sunrise / Umeå Academy of Fine Arts

This year's master's degree exhibition from the Academy of Fine Arts at Umeå University opens at Bildmuseet on 24 May. After Tomorrow at Sunrise features paintings, sculptures, installations, performance, photography, and film by eleven artists. Press preview on Wednesday, 22 May at 10:00 am ( RSVP). Welcome!

After Tomorrow at Sunrise presents works by Ángela Abuja Miranda, Ida Boman, Josefine Borgström, Simon H Danielsson, Maja Gregor, Juni Liv Uma (Maria Bengtsson), Beatriz Martins, Laoise Ní Ghríofa, Janina Renström, Raphael Vargas and Ágnes Vokatá, all of whom are graduating from the master’s programme at the Umeå Academy of Fine Arts. Principal supervisor and curator is artist Annika Eriksson, a professor at the academy.

In addition to their individual works, this year's master's students have created a collective work with Annika Eriksson, a sculpture garden on the riverbank outside Bildmuseet. The inspiration comes from the British artist, filmmaker and gardener Derek Jarman (1942–94) and his distinctive garden on a gravel plain by the sea in the shadow of a nuclear power station. The exhibition's title, After Tomorrow at Sunrise, refers to a line from Jarman's sound poem and film Blue from 1993.

The degree show at Bildmuseet is the culmination of a period of intensive work and research. During the master’s programme, the students developed their artistic practice, explored the history and contemporary social relevance of art, as well as its current themes and status. The exhibition offers insights into the discourse on contemporary art, its techniques and materials.

Exhibition opening Friday 24 May, 17:00–24:00

After Tomorrow at Sunrise opens on Art Friday 24 May, with all participating artists present. The inauguration speeches are at 19:00 by Museum Director Katarina Pierre and Per Nilsson, Head of the Academy of Fine Arts, followed by a short curator's introduction to the exhibition by Professor Annika Eriksson and a performance by Simon H. Danielsson at 19:30. The evening's programme also includes a performance by Ida Boman and Juni Liv Uma at 21:00, guided tours, an open workshop, DJs Louie Lou and Heaven Small, and restaurant and bar open until midnight.

Friday 31 May, 12:00-16:00

Juni Liv Uma runs a workshop for people on paternal leave with children aged 0-6.

Saturday and Sunday 1–2 June, 12:00–17:00

Juni Liv Uma runs a painting workshop with a drop-in for museum visitors of all ages.

Distribution of Grants Sunday 2 June, 15:00–16:00

Distribution of grants among the graduating students, Gallery Alva’s graduation scholarship as well as grants from Gallery Verkligheten, Skytteanska Samfundet, Umeå Academy of Fine Arts and Umeå municipality. Head of Department Per Nilsson will present the grants recipients.

30 May–20 June, the Master students will also have an exhibition at the GSA Gallery in Stockholm.
