Skansen Launches Christmas buffet Celebrating Swedish Culinary Craft

Skansen introduces a Christmas buffet as part of a broader strategic initiative to enhance the park’s food and beverage experiences. Under the direction of renowned restaurateur KC Wallberg, the concept offers a complete gastronomic journey that combines traditional Swedish ingredients and food culture with culinary craftsmanship – tailored for both small and large gatherings.

This year’s theme is “Sweden in Miniature”. Guests are welcomed by winter bonfires, mulled wine, and live string music before entering the beautifully decorated Högloftet or Nyloftet venues, where the Christmas buffet is presented in several stages.

The menu emphasizes quality and builds on Swedish traditions: from the classic brännvinsbord with pickled herring and fish, to charcuterie, pâtés, and a farmer’s harvest table of vegetarian dishes, followed by traditional hot courses. The dessert section draws inspiration from summer pasture farms, featuring Swedish farmstead cheeses, freshly baked cookies, and a traditional candy and sweet shop.

Every ingredient and dish is carefully selected to create a dining experience that is both sustainable and deeply rooted in Swedish culinary heritage. The ambition is to reconnect with the origins of the Swedish Christmas buffet – once a shared festive meal marking the return of light during the midwinter darkness.

“We want to offer a holistic experience that reflects both Skansen’s spirit and the deeper meaning of Christmas,” says KC Wallberg. “A buffet where guests can sit down in peace, embrace the traditions, and enjoy food that tells a story about Sweden.”

“The Christmas buffet is part of our commitment to highlight Swedish culinary craftsmanship as an integral part of Skansen’s offerings. Food is a vital bearer of cultural heritage – and we want every guest to feel that during their visit,” says Karl Aspengren, Head of Food & Beverage at Skansen.

Skansen’s Christmas buffet can be booked by both private guests and companies, and is perfectly suited for intimate parties as well as larger groups. All guests are also encouraged to visit Skansen’s traditional Christmas market during their stay.
