Sentimental Value wins Oscar for Best International Feature Film

The Norwegian film Sentimental Value, co-produced by Film i Väst, has won the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film at this year’s Oscars ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The film received a total of nine Academy Award nominations.

Sentimental Value is directed by Joachim Trier, who also wrote the screenplay together with Eskil Vogt. The film is produced by Mer Film and Eye Eye Pictures in co-production with Film i Väst, Zentropa, Zentropa Sweden, MK Productions, Lumen Production and Komplizen Film. Parts of the film were shot in Västra Götaland (Strömstad) in Sweden, and regional company VP Nordic served as the virtual production provider.
“It is fantastic to see Sentimental Value win an Oscar. We congratulate everyone involved in the film. For us at Film i Väst, it is a great source of pride to be co-producers and to be part of the film’s journey together with such strong creative forces in the Nordic region,” says Kristina Börjeson, Head of Production at Film i Väst.
Sentimental Value had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Grand Prix, and has since received major international recognition, including eight nominations at the European Film Awards (winning six), nine Golden Globe nominations (with Stellan Skarsgård winning Best Supporting Actor), and eight BAFTA nominations (winning Best Film Not in the English Language).

Film i Väst is establishing a new annual award, The Golden Shrimp, to recognize and celebrate individuals who have made significant contributions to film in the region Västra Götaland. The award was presented for the first time during Film i Väst’s annual Production Company Day on 26 November. When the Venice Film Festival opens on August 27, four co-productions from Film i Väst will be presented. Mona Fastvold’s The Testament of Ann Lee, starring Amanda Seyfried, has been selected for the Official Selection and will compete for the prestigious Golden Lion. Anders Thomas Jensen’s The Last Viking (Den Sidste Viking), starring Mads Mikkelsen and Nikolaj Lie Kaas, will also have its world premiere in Venice, screening Out of Competition in the Official Selection. Opening the Orizzonti competition section is Mother by Teona Mitevska, with Noomi Rapace portraying Mother Teresa in the lead role. In addition, the animated short film Rukeli, directed by Alessandro Rak, will be screened in Orizzonti – Short Films Out of Competition.
