What did Easter food look like in the past? How were homes decorated? And why did people believe witches flew to Blåkulla? At Skansen, guests are invited to explore the flavours, colours and folklore of Easter at close range.

Across the historic buildings, stories are brought to life: Easter cards are exchanged, festive meals are prepared, and tales of Easter witches and mythical beings are shared. The solemn stillness of Good Friday contrasts with the more celebratory days that follow. Together, these experiences offer a vivid insight into how Easter has been celebrated in different parts of Sweden – and how these traditions have evolved over time.

Easter holiday activities for children

During the school holiday, children’s experiences are at the forefront. Activities include Easter crafts, face painting and the opportunity to make a traditional broom for the journey to Blåkulla. A small funfair offers rides and games.

In the zoo areas, “egg school” and themed activities introduce seasonal changes. At the same time, many of Skansen’s animals become more active in spring, with species such as bears and moose emerging into livelier behaviour that reflects the rhythms of the season.
