Film i Väst co-productions selected for the Cannes Competition – tenth consecutive year

Two of Film i Väst’s co-productions have been selected for the main competition at the Cannes Film Festival, where they will compete for the prestigious Palme d'Or: Fjord by Cristian Mungiu and Gentle Monster by Marie Kreutzer. This marks the tenth consecutive year that Film i Väst co-productions have been represented in the festival’s most prestigious section.

Fjord is Cristian Mungiu’s first English-language film. The leading roles are played by Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve. Fjord is the fifth consecutive film by director Cristian Mungiu to be selected for the competition at the Cannes Film Festival, following R.M.N. (2022), Graduation (Best Director, 2016), Beyond the Hills (Best Actresses and Best Screenplay, 2012), and 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (Palme d’Or and European Film Academy awards for Best Film and Best Director, 2007).

Gentle Monster by Austrian director Marie Kreutzer, stars Léa Seydoux, Jella Haase, Laurence Rupp and Catherine Deneuve. Marie Kreutzer’s film Corsage (2022) premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival and was Austria’s submission for the Academy Awards.

The Cannes Film Festival today, April 9, announced the selection for the festival’s official sections. Additional films may still be added, and further sections will be announced at a later date.

Sentimental Value, directed by Joachim Trier, has today received nine Academy Award nominations: Actress in a Supporting Role (Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas), Actor in a Supporting Role (Stellan Skarsgård), Original Screenplay (Eskil Vogt and Joachim Trier), International Feature Film, Film Editing (Olivier Bugge Coutté), Actress in a Leading Role (Renate Reinsve), Directing (Joachim Trier), and Best Picture (producers Maria Ekerhovd and Andrea Berentsen Ottmar). Film i Väst is establishing a new annual award, The Golden Shrimp, to recognize and celebrate individuals who have made significant contributions to film in the region Västra Götaland. The award was presented for the first time during Film i Väst’s annual Production Company Day on 26 November. In its inaugural year, 2025, the award goes to producer Lars Jönsson, one of Swedish cinema’s most influential creatives and a central force in the West Swedish film wave—from the very first days of Film i Väst up until today.
