Rare Giacometti table sold for 6,3 million SEK at The Design Sale
28.4.2026 18:10:00 CEST | Stockholms Auktionsverk (ENG) | Press Release
A rare table by Swiss sculptor and designer Diego Giacometti was sold for 6,3 million SEK at Stockholms Auktionsverk’s live auction The Design Sale on Tuesday. The final price marks the highest ever achieved for a 20th-century piece of furniture in Sweden.

The sculptural table, “Berceau", modèle aux chats from the early 1970s, attracted strong interest from both Swedish and international collectors. Following intense bidding, the work reached its record-breaking price, significantly exceeding its pre-sale estimate of 3–4 million SEK.
Diego Giacometti (1902–1985), younger brother of Alberto Giacometti, is renowned for his distinctive artistic language, in which sculpture and functional design merge seamlessly. The sold table belongs to his iconic cradle table series, characterised by gently curved, cradle-like side supports and stylised cat figures integrated into the structure.
– It is highly unusual for these rare tables by Diego Giacometti to appear at auction in the Nordic region, and we are extremely pleased and proud of this result. Setting a new Swedish record for a 20th-century piece of furniture is a testament to the strong international demand for exceptional design and to our solid position in the market, says Ulrika Ruding, Head of Design at Stockholms Auktionsverk.
The table has a well-documented provenance and has been part of a private Swedish collection since the 1980s. Prior to the auction, it was examined by leading experts in Paris, who confirmed its authenticity.
