RISE in major Swedish initiative for the battery industry

“This is a collaborative effort to further develop and scale up new solutions, and we look forward to contributing with our expertise and technical infrastructure for testing and demonstration. Sweden and the Nordic region need to strengthen their competitiveness in this field, not least to enhance our resilience,” says Dina Dedic, Program Director for batteries at RISE.

The goal of the initiative is to scale up and implement technologies and solutions across the entire value chain—from raw materials and production to recycling and reuse. Developing sustainable battery production is important for achieving climate goals, but it also provides opportunities for a competitive industry throughout the battery value chain. This includes everything from extraction and refinement of raw materials to battery production, use, and recycling.

The initiative amounts to SEK 316 million through 2028 and is based on an assignment from the Swedish government, with industry, academia and other public actors collaborating.

 “Sweden has a strong position thanks to access to raw materials, fossil-free electricity, expertise, and strong companies and partners. At the same time, there is strong international competition and a race for battery investments,” says Ida Langborg, who is responsible for Vinnova’s work on sustainable value chains.

The initiative begins with seven projects receiving a total of SEK 86 million to further develop and scale up solutions that, once implemented, can contribute to a sustainable battery value chain.

Projects involving RISE:

• SafeBat – safe and circular contamination control for the battery value chain
• Industrial scaling of the circular battery value chain – reuse, commercial application, and recycling
• SUSTAIN-SEP – sustainable scaling of separators for safer batteries
• Process development and scaling of organic flow batteries for a sustainable Swedish battery value chain
• Development and scaling of thin sodium-ion battery cells with bio-based materials for sustainable electronics and roll-to-roll production
