Geneva, 5 November 2026 – Infomaniak, a Swiss cloud service provider, is launching a new S3-compatible object storage service in its sovereign Public Cloud. Businesses and developers can use it to store backups, archives or AI data with the S3-compatible tools they already use. Files can be locked against any modification or deletion for a chosen period and, once the option is enabled, automatically copied to a second Infomaniak data centre in Switzerland. The service is billed on a pay-as-you-go basis, with 10 TB of outbound traffic included every month and no request fees. Data stays in Switzerland, under Swiss jurisdiction, with an independent provider.

Protecting data against attacks and incidents

Object storage is used to keep large volumes of files. A business can, for example, store its server backups, its archives or the images and videos for its website. A developer can keep application files or the training data for an AI model. Files are encrypted at rest and in transit, and customers can use their own encryption keys.

Customers can also lock their files (Object Lock) for a period of their choice. During that time, no one can modify or delete them. In addition, the service can keep previous versions of each file, so customers can roll back when needed. These features provide extra protection against ransomware, which encrypts or deletes backups before demanding a ransom. This matters all the more as AI speeds up the discovery of software vulnerabilities.

To keep data available, it is spread across several independent zones. If one of them is affected by an incident, the others take over. Customers can also have Infomaniak automatically copy their data to a second data centre in Switzerland, simply by enabling the option. The Swiss company contractually guarantees 99.9% service availability, and 99.99% with this copy. Infomaniak is ISO 27001 certified for information security and ISO 9001 certified for the quality of its services.

Switch providers without switching tools

Thanks to S3 compatibility, a business can migrate its data from another provider without rewriting its applications, and move it out again the same way. Its teams keep using their usual tools, such as AWS CLI, rclone or s3cmd. Infomaniak runs the entire infrastructure, and storage buckets, access rights and files can be managed from a web interface, with no command line needed.

Backed by years of large-scale operations

The service is built on Ceph, an open-source storage technology that Infomaniak already runs at scale, notably for SwissTransfer. This free file transfer service, available across Europe, was handling 8 million transfers a month at the end of June 2026.

“Our teams have run Ceph for years, both for SwissTransfer and for Swiss Backup, which can back up more than 1,000 TB per customer. We know this technology inside out and develop it further ourselves, without depending on a software vendor,” explains Olivier Chaze, Team Lead Storage at Infomaniak.

Competitive, predictable pricing

Customers only pay for the storage they use, by the hour and with no commitment. Requests are not billed, and 10 TB of outbound traffic is included every month. Data copied to the second data centre is billed as storage. Up-to-date prices are available on the service page. To try out the service, Infomaniak is offering CHF 300 or EUR 300 in Public Cloud credit, valid for three months.

Object storage joins servers, databases and AI

Object storage complements the Public Cloud, which already offers virtual servers and their disks, DDoS-protected networks, as well as Kubernetes clusters, databases and a DNS service managed by Infomaniak. The Public Cloud is built on OpenStack, an open and interoperable technology that Infomaniak has used since 2012 and to which its teams contribute directly. For AI, it offers GPUs up to the NVIDIA B300 and H200. Infomaniak also provides open-source models hosted in Switzerland, including Apertus. They are available via AI Services, an OpenAI-compatible API, and can be used to write, translate and code, create or analyse images, transcribe audio, query documents (RAG) or build AI agents.

A sovereign cloud that measures and reduces its impact

Data stored with Infomaniak falls under Swiss law, with no intermediary subject to extraterritorial laws, and the service is operated by teams based in Switzerland. The Infomaniak Foundation, which is recognised as serving the public interest, holds the majority of the company’s voting rights, ensuring its lasting independence.

The service meets the requirements of the GDPR and Swiss data protection law. Personal data can flow to it as freely as within the European Union, which recognises data protection in Switzerland as equivalent to its own.

Infomaniak’s data centres run exclusively on certified, locally generated renewable electricity and are cooled without conventional air conditioning. The newest, in Geneva, winner of the Green Business Award 2026, is designed to feed all of its heat into the district heating network. At full capacity, it is expected to avoid around 3,600 tonnes of CO₂ a year compared with natural gas heating. The company is ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 certified for environmental and energy management.

“In the European Union, more than half of all businesses already buy cloud services. Choosing a provider also means asking who will control it ten years from now. Our goal is to offer businesses a complete, sovereign public cloud they can rely on for the long term,” says Marc Oehler, CEO of Infomaniak.

Frankfurt am Main, November 2026. Modelled on the French initiative “100 euros - 1 Picasso”, the campaign “100 euros - 1 Michelangelo figure of the 16th century” offers one donor the chance to receive a wooden figure of Pope Julius II. The non-profit association Michelangelo-Julius II.-Figur e. V. considers this piece a rediscovered masterpiece by Michelangelo Buonarroti. CEZ scientific analysis dates the wood to around 1500, aligning directly with Michelangelo’s era. All proceeds will be divided 50:50 between the Nobel Peace Prize laureate Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières) and the association. A comprehensive account of the artwork is published on michelangelo-lost-masterpiece.com. The figure represents Pope Julius II; while the famous bronze monument in Bologna was destroyed, the association views this surviving wooden bozzetto as the sole preserved sculptural record and one of the rarest wooden works attributed to Michelangelo.
