Sustainable Logistics

Green Cargo provides industry with safe, high‑capacity and sustainable freight services to around 200 locations in Scandinavia and, through partners, to nearly 1,000 locations across the rest of Europe. Our customers are concentrated in the basic industries – forestry, steel and paper, but also include sectors such as chemicals and energy, engineering and manufacturing, automotive and grocery retail. Nearly 98 percent of our total transport operations are powered by electric locomotives using electricity sourced exclusively from fossil‑free generation. We are 1,750 committed employees working together to turn new insights and ideas into continuous improvements to our business. Rail freight is a vital foundation of Sweden’s prosperity and competitiveness.

Tests of digital automatic couplers (DAC) are now underway under some of Europe’s most demanding railway conditions as the steel shuttle is equipped with the latest technology. Green Cargo operates the Luleå–Borlänge route with the freight train, which is a central part of SSAB’s production chain. The test is part of the FP5 TRANS4M-R innovation project within the framework of Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking (EU-Rail).

Green Cargo is investing in a more robust and reliable network for 2025. Starting with the timetable shift in 2025, the new network will enable shorter lead times, more frequent departures, reduced susceptibility to disruptions, and improved punctuality, creating increased value for the company’s customers. In the new network, traffic will be strengthened in the corridors where the major freight flows are transported.

Green Cargo has awarded Euromaint a renewed five-year maintenance contract to manage, in partnership, the Rc/Rd locos, which are the majority of the locos in the largest fleet of locomotives in Sweden owned by Green Cargo, as well as the strategic components. The network of Green Cargo covers the entire country from north to south in Sweden. This is an operative approach can be further optimised by the corresponding service centres network of Euromaint, in cities as Luleå, Vännäs, Sundsvall, Borlänge, Hallsberg, Örebro, Gothenburg and Malmö.

Ten new Vectron locomotives strengthen Green Cargo's international traffic16.8.2023 08:06:00 CEST | Press Release

The first of ten new Vectron locomotives has been delivered to Green Cargo in Malmö. The locomotives will primarily be used to strengthen Green Cargo's international traffic in the corridor between Malmö and Maschen in Germany starting in 2024. The six current corridor locomotives will be integrated into Green Cargo's domestic network and increase the company's capacity on the Swedish market.

Green Cargo AB and Fiskarhedens Trävaru AB have entered a new agreement in partnership with the logistics company Träfraktkontoret i Göteborg AB. This means that from December, the Malungsfors terminal will be included in Green Cargo’s network comprising nearly 300 tariff points in Scandinavia as well as partners in Europe. Initially, the transports shipments will include several container trains per week to the Port of Gothenburg, but timetables are in place for five departures, which enables quick expansion of the freight traffic with, for example, intermodal trailer freight and wagon loads.

The Board of Green Cargo AB has decided to discontinue the company’s Norwegian domestic operations, comprising three rail freight lines, in the first quarter of 2023. The immediate cause of this decision is that the economic conditions for conducting commercially viable operations do not exist. The decision to discontinue operations will affect some 30 customers and about 120 employees in our Norwegian subsidiaries. Green Cargo is now entering negotiations with trade unions concerning the execution.
