How do we build competitiveness in an era of AI, skills shortages and rising levels of mental ill-health? This is the question at the heart of the launch of the international Brain Health for Economic Resilience Commission. RISE is participating in the initiative, which brings together leading experts in neuroscience, economics, societal development, and innovation.

RISE is now strengthening its collaboration with Vanadis Energy to industrialise zinc-ion batteries and vanadium-based solid-state battery technology, which can be used for energy storage. The aim is to build a robust Swedish industrial base.

RISE Research Institutes of Swedens new test platform for bidirectional charging between electrical vehicles and grid covers the complete chain from the onboard charger of the vehicle to the charging infrastructure. It is among the first in Europe to support AC charging according to the new ISO standard. First to try out the new test platform is Toyota Industries Corporation. The platform is situated at SEEL Swedish Electric Transport Laboratory, a test environment for electrified transport systems.

Since its launch in 2016, RISE’s ICE Datacenter facility in Luleå has developed into an internationally recognised innovation environment involving more than one hundred companies. ICE Datacenter plays a leading role in a sector that is at the heart of societal development.

As one of Europe’s most advanced environments for research and testing of electrified transportation systems, SEEL must meet stringent requirements for information security and prototype protection to address the automotive industry’s specific needs. The test center’s two facilities in Säve and Nykvarn are now certified under TISAX, the automotive industry’s common standard for the secure handling of data, development information, and prototype protection. Together with the previously certified Battery Safety Lab in Borås, this means that all three SEEL facilities now meet TISAX requirements.

Sweden needs a more resilient and sustainable food system in order to remain competitive in the future and be able to produce good, healthy food for everyone. A new report from RISE and the FINEST centre now shows that an effective and radical transformation is possible. Through system innovation, new forms of collaboration and a multi-level perspective where solutions are linked together into a coherent whole, stakeholders in the food chain can more quickly find the solutions that lead to both increased sustainability and increased profitability within the food sector.

Using so-called additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, it is possible to manufacture or repair spare parts for food and drinking water production. This could be a way of keeping production running in the event of disrupted supplies during crises and wars. This is demonstrated by a project carried out by RISE on behalf of the Swedish Food Agency.

RISE Research Institutes of Sweden and Japanese technology company MK Plus (Vanadis Energy) are signing a five-year strategic agreement on the development of next-generation battery technology. The collaboration focuses on vanadium-based solid-state batteries and strengthens the Swedish value chain for energy storage, from materials and cell production to system integration, recycling and industrial scale-up.

Through an acquisition of advanced SiC epitaxy equipment in Kista, Sweden, RISE becomes a world leader in power semiconductors.

High Coast to West Coast Hydrogen Valley is a new EU-funded project aimed at developing regional value chains for renewable hydrogen in Västernorrland and Western Sweden. A first-of-its-kind study finds that Sweden is losing SEK 600 billion each year due to linear economy practices, such as designing products for short lifespans and failing to reuse or recycle them.
