Gothenburg in first place among sustainable destinations in the world
First place, the Leadership Award, went to Gothenburg, Sweden, when the Global Destination Sustainability Movement (GDSM) revealed the results of this year's world ranking. The award was presented at the annual City DNA tourism congress in Valencia on Wednesday evening. The award is given to the destination that best meets the requirements in the Global Destination Sustainability Index comparison.

“We are immensely proud. This is once again a fantastic and important recognition of Gothenburg's long-term sustainability work, for us as a destination and for all contributing stakeholders, the GDS index has been a powerful lever in the development of our destination and it is fantastic to see that more and more destinations are participating in this crucial work”, says Peter Grönberg, CEO of Gothenburg & Co.
The Global Destination Sustainability Index (GDSI) is a comparative ranking started in 2016 by the organization Global Destination Sustainability Movement. Since the start, Gothenburg has been placed at the top every time. It is sustainability in all dimensions that is measured; ecological, social and economic. But to get high in the ranking, it is not only important that the hospitality industry with facilities and hotels are committed and involved, but also how the city in general works with sustainability issues.
More than 100 cities from all over the world participated in this year's survey. Gothenburg took the top spot ahead of Oslo and Copenhagen. The margins were not large, which shows that more and more destinations are working actively and successfully with sustainability issues.
