Essential to Include Bioeconomy in EU's Clean Industrial Deal
The Swedish Forest Industries Federation (SFIF) welcomes the European Commission's proposal for the Clean Industrial Deal. The focus on the circular bioeconomy as a way to substitute fossil materials is an essential step towards achieving the climate targets.

The Clean Industrial Deal is a key component in achieving the EU Green Deal and ambitious climate targets. Ambitious sustainability targets can be addressed more effectively in a well-functioning and growing EU economy. The SFIF therefore appreciates the Commission’s initiatives to strengthen innovation and competitiveness. The forest-based industry has immense potential to contribute to a sustainable climate transition.
‘The fact that the Clean Industrial Deal highlights the importance of growing the bioeconomy to substitute more fossil materials is an important step towards achieving climate targets. The SFIF also urges the Commission to include concrete actions and initiatives to strengthen competitiveness for the bioeconomy, especially regarding regulatory burden, as well as the other sections mentioned,’ says Viveka Beckeman, SFIF Director General.
‘“Access to sustainable renewable material is the most urgent competitiveness factor, for the bioeconomy and the EU Green Deal, and strategic dialogue is needed to address this. The forest industry is eager to and capable of contributing to a green transition and strengthening the European Union’s competitiveness,’ says Viveka Beckeman.
The SFIF is pleased that the CID addresses the need for access to affordable fossil- free energy. It is essential to shorten permitting times for renewable energy and grids. A more efficient use of the existing electricity grid should be a central part of the Action Plan for Affordable Energy. Resolving internal structural congestions with efficient bidding zones in Member States that have internal congestions should be a priority.
The SFIF believes that the bioeconomy is essential for achieving the EU's climate goals and ensuring long-term sustainability. By leveraging the forest industry's capacity to produce renewable materials, the EU can reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and promote economic growth through innovation and sustainable practices. SFIF eagerly anticipates the EU Commission's forthcoming bioeconomy strategy, which will further outline the path towards a sustainable and competitive bioeconomy.
