Spring Repertoire 2026 at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm, Sweden
A brutal and humorous vision of the future by internationally acclaimed director Milo Rau, Swedish porn film Fäbodjäntan reimagined, a two-act drama by writer Alex Schulman, world premiere for The Misanthrope by Jens Ohlin and Hannes Meidal and a newly written space epic based on Stanisław Lem’s novel Solaris. All this and much more on Dramaten’s stages this spring.

–We continue to work towards a polyphonic repertoire, where creators and performing artists from diverse geographical, social, and aesthetic backgrounds are given the opportunity to freely develop their personal theatrical languages together with our actors. We believe this is the best way to engage with the audience in a constantly shifting, polarized, and chaotic world,” says Mattias Andersson, Artistic Director at Dramaten.
Premieres in chronological order
Mors Dag (Mother’s Day) by Alex Schulman
World premiere 24 January.
Three grown sons are making a cake in their childhood kitchen to celebrate their mother on Mother’s Day. The reluctant mother, played by Helena Bergström, protests loudly from the next room–just as she did back when the father was alive and the celebration ended in disaster. Like many of Schulman’s novels, the play springs from his own lived childhood events. It unfolds in two acts–first from the sons’ perspective in the kitchen, then from the mother’s in the neighboring room.
Cast: Helena Bergström, Björn Elgerd, David Rangborg, Peter Viitanen and Nils Wetterholm.
Rage by Milo Rau.
World premiere 31 January.
Written for Dramaten, Rage depicts a near-future Sweden where the far right has won the election, and a state of emergency has been declared. Over the course of 24 hours in a beautiful summer cottage in the countryside, some are hiding – while others are hunting. A fast, outspoken, and brutal confrontation –“super funny, super honest and super brutal,” according to the playwright – somewhere between White Lotus and Funny Games. Swiss director Milo Rau is one of Europe’s most celebrated and controversial theatre makers today. He is also behind The Pelicot Trial (to be performed at Dramaten on 9 December), a staging of the widely discussed French court case against Gisèle Pelicot’s husband and the fifty other men accused of sexually assaulting her. Cast: Nikola Borggård Gavanozov, Alva Bratt, Simon Edenroth, Alex Jubell, Elin Klinga, Hulda Lind Jóhannsdóttir, Alexander de Sousa and Rebecca Plymholt.
I bomullsfältens ensamhet (In the Solitude of Cotton Fields) by Bernard-Marie Koltès. Directed by Staffan Valdemar Holm.
Premiere February 28.
A verbal duel between a dealer and a client who meet in a desolate place. The play epitomizes Bernard-Marie Koltès’ artistry–giving voice to the voiceless, questioning the postcolonial world order, and viewing dialogue as a form of negotiation. Born in 1948 and lost to Aids in 1989 at the age of 41, Koltès was one of the major young stars of 1980s French theatre.
Cast: Lena Endre and Ingela Olsson.
Fäbodjäntan (Come and Blow the Horn) by Amanda Apetrea, Lisen Rosell, Nadja Hjorton, Daniel Åkerström-Steen & Chrisander Brun
World premiere 6 March.
The porn film Fäbodjäntan, shot in 1978, quickly became a cult classic – thanks in part to its mix of idyllic Swedish countryside and sexually explicit content. Now, the universe of Fäbodjäntan is brought back to life, exploring past and present, Falukorv (Swedish red, thick sausage) and cultural canon, body and desire in a brand-new work. Amanda Apetrea, Lisen Rosell, and Nadja Hjorton together with scenographer and lighting designer Chrisander Brun and costume designer Daniel Åkerström-Steen, previously created acclaimed and provocative reinterpretations of The Clan of the Cave Bear and Pride and Prejudice at Turteatern in Stockholm.
Cast: Amanda Apetrea, Lisen Rosell, Nadja Hjorton.
Misantropen (The Misanthrope) by Jens Ohlin and Hannes Meidal
Directed and composed by Jens Ohlin.
World premiere 26 March.
Drawing inspiration from Molière’s classic, Ohlin and Meidal create their own universe filled with grotesque characters and crowd-pleasing musical numbers. The Misanthrope is an idiotically hopeful comedy, written in rhymed verse, about the importance of at least pretending to be better than we are. The duo Ohlin/Meidal have successfully reimagined several great classics, most recently Macbeth on Dramaten’s Main Stage with renowned Swedish actress Christina Schollin in a main role and Fanny and Alexander by Ingmar Bergman at Teater Galeasen. In 2017, they received the Swedish Thalia Prize for their acclaimed reinterpretation of Hamlet at Galeasen, which also earned the Swedish Theatre Critics’ Award the same year.
Cast: Johan Holmberg, Omid Khansari, Hannes Meidal, Claes Månsson, Sofia Pekkari and Lotta Tejle.
Solaris by Annika Nyman, after the novel by Stanisław Lem. Directed by Gustav Englund.
World premiere 16 April.
When psychologist Kris Kelvin arrives at the space station orbiting the planet Solaris, chaos reigns. One crew member is dead, and strange human-like figures—manifestations of their most intimate memories–visit the survivors. In the night, Kelvin’s deceased wife sits beside him on the bed. Playwright Annika Nyman’s new work draws from Stanisław Lem’s classic sci-fi novel, adapted for screen for the first time by Andrei Tarkovsky in 1972. Under Gustav Englund’s direction, Solaris becomes a relationship drama about self-knowledge and the mysterious forces beyond the self.
Cast: Danilo Bejarano, Erik Ehn, Rasmus Luthander, Nina Togner Fex.
Vilse (Lost) by Mare Kandre. Directing advice by Staffan Valdemar Holm
Dramaten premiere 24 April.
At the center: a relationship of dependency, power struggle, and deep intimacy—two women trying to understand themselves and each other in a landscape where time seems to stand still. 2025 marks twenty years since the passing of Mare Kandre, who died at only 42 years of age. To honour this important literary voice, actors Nina Togner Fex and Katarina Lundgren-Hugg reunite with director Staffan Valdemar Holm, continuing a collaboration that began in the 1990s. The production is a joint venture between Dramaten and Malmö Stadsteater, where it premiered in autumn 2025.
Cast: Nina Togner Fex and Katarina Lundgren-Hugg.
UNGA DRAMATEN (YOUNG DRAMATEN)
Loop. Choreography and direction: Björn Säfsten
World premiere February 24 at Sabbatsberg’s Hospital
Performed at Dramaten19 March – 2 April.
A dance performance for people with profound intellectual disabilities. Loop is produced in collaboration with the Center for Sensory Stimulation at Stockholm within the County’s Habilitation & Health that works daily with the target group. The production will first be performed on-site at Sabbatsbergs Hospital and in March at Dramaten.
Cast: Pär Andersson.
Fyndplats: Dramaten (Discovery: Dramaten). Concept and direction: Linn Hilda Lamberg and Stefan Åkesson (Poste Restante)
World premiere 17 April – site-specific performance.
Inside Dramaten, a major clearing-out of century-old props is underway. The audience–equipped with lab coats and gloves–is invited to interpret the theatre’s and humanity’s history. Together with actors, they dust off old misconceptions, sort through historical mistakes, and bury what is too precious for our ignorant present. The theatre collective Poste Restante is known for site-specific, participatory performances that meet each visitor with respect for their unique perspective.
For middle school audiences. Cast to be announced.
Other productions
Dramaten.Doc continues this spring with staged readings offering artistic commentary on current global events (dates to be announced).

Theatre manager and artistic director Mattias Andersson´s version of Hamlet which has played to sold-out houses since its premiere at Dramaten’s experimental stage Elverket (which, for financial reasons, will be closed down as a theatre venue in the new year) will come back autumn 2026 on the main stage.
