Royal Dramatic Theatre cancels all public activities

The management of the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm (Dramaten) decided today to cancel all public activities until Tuesday, 31 March. Their decision is based on the risk analysis performed this weekend. In view of its responsibility to audiences and employees, the Royal Dramatic Theatre considers closing to be necessary at present.

On Saturday afternoon, all weekend performances at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm were cancelled, and the management has now decided to cancel all public activities for two weeks.Their decision is based on the Public Health Agency’s in Sweden clarifications with regard to activities attended by many participants.

On Monday afternoon, it was also confirmed that one case of coronavirus infection had been found among the Theatre’s staff.The Royal Dramatic Theatre has therefore decided to limit the presence of staff in the workplace on Monday and Tuesday. The purpose is to facilitate a deeper analysis in order to set up more detailed guidelines for subsequent activities.

“In view of its responsibility to audiences and employees, the Royal Dramatic Theatre considers it necessary to remain closed at present.We are analysing the situation, consulting experts and continuously updating our decisions,” says Maria Groop Russel, Managing Director of the Royal Dramatic Theatre.

The Royal Dramatic Theatre, best known as Dramaten, is Sweden’s national theatre. In accordance with its assignment from the Swedish government to preserve theatre history and promote the development of the dramatic arts, the Royal Dramatic Theatre produces performances of classical theatre, newly-written dramas and plays for children and youth.The Royal Dramatic Theatre is state-owned. Its managing director is Maria Groop Russel, and Mattias Andersson is the theatre manager and artistic director.

The Royal Dramatic Theatre has been located in its current premises at Nybroplan since 1908. The building houses four stages. The Main Stage seats up to 770 people.The Small Stage is in an adjoining building directly behind the Nybroplan building, on Almlöfsgatan.Since 1997, the Royal Dramatic Theatre has also had a stage at Elverket on Linnégatan 69.

Under april och maj har Dramaten och nitton teatrar runt om i landet haft i uppdrag att skriva texter som på olika sätt förmedlar perspektiv och intryck från livet under en pandemi. På nationaldagen kommer de färdiga bidragen, korta filmade monologer, att publiceras under vinjetten Osäkerhetens tid på Dramatens och de medverkande teatrarnas hemsidor. Bakom höstens klassiker står två internationellt erkända regissörer. Den omtalade brittiska Lyndsey Turner kommer till Sverige för första gången för att sätta upp en ny version av Tjechovs Måsen, tyske Michael Thalheimer återkommer till Dramaten för att ta sig an tragedin Elektra. Den samtida ryske dramatikern Ivan Vyrypajevs pjäs Berusade ges i regi av Tobias Theorell och Tvillingarna efter ungerska Ágota Kristófs roman Den stora skrivboken ges i regi av Sofia Jupither. Nyskrivet svenskt är pjäsen Liv Strömquist tänker på sig själv, en efterlängtad uppföljare till Liv Strömquist tänker på dig! i regi av Ada Berger.
